Eric - I bought these 180's ear covers exactly because of difficulty getting a hat under my helmet.  I can get a thin balaclava under the helmet but still seem to need something specific to keep my ears warm.

Two kinds to consider, regular and Exolite. I have the Exolite because they fit a little better for my small head.

The 180's can be found at many stores, on sale sometimes.  They've been very effective for me, and I ride through the winter, temps down to mid-20's.  Lots of colors and styles, here are two:

Liesl,
Thanks for the write up.  Probably will get one.  Have such a hard time with any hats under helmet.  A Smartwool beanie can fit or possibly another beanie I have sitting around.  No matter what, my ear lobes end up getting cold.  Sigh.

Being a warm rider, and having a large head makes it nearly impossible for me to find a good compromise in winter.

Ps. Eric--the radar may possibly be too warm for you under your helmet unless it's really Minnesota-cold.  as a smaller person, I run colder so it's great for me. (also just saw that I had a missed word--it not *only* covers below the ear...)

Cold necks, cold ear lobes, lets all just move to Hawaii, the pics on that new Hunq ride looked nice! But seriously, I wear a Balaclava but have a Nutcase helmet in a size larger than I typically wear, the upshot is it only has a few vents too to make it nice and warm. I know some will balk at owning a winter and summer helmet but it the ear covers you speak fell off on a couple of rides, although I do use them for when I go to Giants games.

Not me!  Big difference riding above 85 and below 20.  That's like balking at sandals versus sorrels!

It was about 25 this morning on the ride in.  Wore the radar under a winter helmet.  Nothing was slidin' and 'lobes were toasty.

And again I'll just plug the Filson Mackinaw Wool Vest, possibly the finest all-around cold weather garment ever.  Might wanna put it on your wish list for who ever's buying you a nice present.  Of course after you've spent your $300 at Riv.

Good ideas.  I have multiple helmets for different weather conditions. Problem is, even the biggest are too small with a real hat.  A Bern XXL is barely big enough.  If it gets cold enough will wear a 30+ year old Columbia bomber hat.

Hmm, I have never owned a Bern helmet but I wear a size 8 hat so I have a big old noggin and the XL Nutcase with a hat fits nice. Maybe head to the lbs with hat in hand and compare, could be some brands run bigger than others?

Peter,
Good to know.  Have never tried a Nutcase.  Will see if they're easy or tough to find around here in the Twin Cities.

(Hopefully the XL Nutcase won't be a search like the XXL Bern.  Tried 6 or 7 different stores to find one that had a single one in stock.)
