I just received an email from Rivendell telling me that my Platy has been shipped- or rather, that a shipping label has been printed. (This will be my fourth Riv since 1999.) One of the newsletters said that they expected to receive their container “around Halloween” so I would guess this is one of the first shipped.

Have any other incipient Platypus owners received their notice?

Mike,

Congrats. When it comes in, hit us with some pictures. I'd love to see a family picture with all of your Rivs. How many of the four do you still own?

There’ll be pictures of the whole process, no question. To answer your question, I still have all of them. The Quickbeam is currently stripped down while I decide whether to repaint it. It’s probably going to be sold, as my knees like having low gears available at the shift of a lever.i suspect climbing hills in that bike is what gave me a torn meniscus.

Assembly begins tonight, or maybe tomorrow morning- I’m anxious to test ride it soon. It hit 76 today but it’ll be cooling down to more typical November in Michigan weather soon.

IMG_5773.jpegI expected to have to do a lot more work based on how my Clem arrived. Brakes were pretty much set out of the box. The only thing left is to check the limit screws. I’ll put a B67 or Flyer on it tomorrow and do the final adjustments.

IMG_5777.jpegDid my first ride today- 7 miles in windy (15mph) weather. Impressions:

The Platy is very lively feeling, particularly compared to my Clem.
I like the Silver shifters. I think Grant has accomplished everything he wanted with these. Definitely worth the difference in price over the modified Microshifts.
The Panaracer Gravel King Slicks are ann excellent tire for this bike. Smooth riding, good cornering on pavement, and they handle the occasional dirt and gravel road. I’m tempted to get a pair of the SK variant for my Clem.

One final mod to make: I’m going to replace the Tallex stem with a Dirt Drop, which I have on all my Rivs, to shorten the reach and bring the bars up a little.

Michael, did I read that you, too, are a Platypus-owning Michigander? Congrats on your Platy; I had a Clem at one time, too, and I find the Platy to be just as you say. Lively. I rode mine in this mild Michigan weather for a pleasant 20 miles today. You are going to LOVE this bike. My 50 (pictured) has Silver shifters that I love and Gravel King tires (also love). I hope we can do a Michigan ride next year and that you’ll bring your new Platypus!

Leah: I am indeed, in the Metro Detroit area, and I am honored to be recognized by Rivendell’s favorite Platypus owner! 😉

I know you’re just being kind but I am going to write this down somewhere and bask in it from time to time! 😉🥰 Welcome to the Platypus Club! It’s so good here.
