Took a Southwest flight this week, and there on pg. 111 in the latest airline magazine is a Cheviot! (At least I think it is)

Here's a closer look:

Who owns a Chevi' in Charleston?

Saw the same photo. Look up @tinysuitcase and @pfephoto on instagram. Thinks that is theirs

Yet another reason why SW is my favorite airline.

That is correct-she has a Cheviut and he has an Atlantis.
I also live in Charleston and ride a Cheviot.
Not many Riv bikes here in Charleston-but have spotted a few others.

More Riv sightings: The newest Adventure Cycling Magazine July 2018 has a photo of a Cheviot in a profile on Life Members on Page 42. The Cheviot appears to be painted black and looks great in that color. Photo of page attached.

Nine one. Every time I see a black Riv I’m tempted all over again. When the Atlantis is ready for paint, black it is.

Minneapolis, Lake Harriet, Memorial Day 2026 - beautiful metallic orange custom. Temporarily parked my Silver Sam next to it.

look like all-rounder lugs to me but...nice color and probably is an early custom (or not Waterford-built)

I realized after I posted that I should have clarified that I categorize all of the Rivendell-branded frames,i.e. the ones without another name, as “Custom”. That includes all the early Waterford-built Road, Long-Low, All-Rounder, and ATB frames.

Waterford considered every Rivendell frame to be a custom build, which was one of the reasons we created Heron.

In this case, based on the lugs and the parts, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is an earlier frame with a repaint. I didn’t spend a lot of time examining the details, though.

Because I knew that you were associated with the Herons(very nice bikes) and a friend/colleague of Grant, I hedged about whether the bike was a custom or stock all-rounder...plus I was aware that around 1998 Rivendell started using other builders besides Waterford (Match was one) and using other tubing manufacturers (Vitus, Columbus, IIRCC). If I'd seen purple French 753 decals or the W seat-stay caps in the photo, it would have been a dead giveaway of course. My own A/R was ordered in August 1997 and delivered in December in the same year. Can't bring myself to get rid of it yet.

That being said....@Ted, thanks for clearing that up. Much as I appreciate their newer offerings, I am very attached to the classics

I didn’t look closely at the seatstay caps, but at a quick look they seemed like Waterford’s, which along with the lugs and crown and patina on the headbadge suggest an older frame.

The seat tube RBW decal suggests a more recent build or a repaint.

Hey Ted,

Looks like I should have taken a right out of the drive instead of a left yesterday for the morning ride.  The Harriet Bandshell is just about a mile from my place as the crow flies.

Just got back from my builder a couple of weeks ago for custom rack with integrated light, a new King/SON wheel build with NOS Mavic D521 rims and have been shaking down the current iteration.

The one thing I could not get myself to touch from the original build as received for v1 (fender tourer) or this v2 of my builds is the crank setup.  Perfect cranks in my preferred length, just perfectly feathered around the stays.  Does not get much better.

Now that would have been a fun surprise, seeing my old ATB! I did a loop around Bde Maka Ska before I took the picture at Harriet.

You and my daughter must be in the same ‘hood. She’s just south of the Linden Hills downtown area.

The Uptown side of Bde Maka Ska has always been my hood.

While not a Riv, my first ride of the year, this year, was ON Bde Maka Ska.

Hey John,

The red brakes on the Riv Expedition are a NOS set of Paul Neo/Touring brakes from a run in red probably 15 years ago.  Purchased for a project that never materialized and have been slowly using up the red parts where it makes sense.

Thanks guys.  It's a fun ride and felt very fortunate to pick this up here a couple of years ago.

Old stock King Classic red 36H in rear and Son 28 up front.
