Greetings,
Are any listers bringing their Rivendell to Iowa this year?  Drop me a line and maybe we can run into each other, er...ride a bit together.  I've seen Rivs every year and met Julian W once while riding.  Glad to answer any logistics questions you may have if you are on the fence.

This will be my ninth RABRAI and I have gone back and forth between my 60 TT Sam Hillborne, and a 62 Waterford Atlantis...both wonderful rides.  RAGBRAI is NOT a race.  I describe it as a 'weeklong rolling block party' with 10 - 15thousand other riders enjoying the hospitality of the pass-through towns and overnight stops with entertainment and food options everywhere.

There are SO many ways to experience this ride.  I've ridden with a small team from Western PA a few times and we used Host Family's generosity to pitch tents in their yards and sometimes were offered floor space/beds and always had Bathroom access.  This year I will use the PBV charter and have them set up a tent for me every night.  Friends joining me this year with PBV are getting hotels every night (arranged by PBV) at an extra cost.

My wife and I will be joining along for the chaos this year traveling in style atop our beloved Rivendell HubbuHubbuH tandem.

We will be riding self-supported loaded up with all of our gear and tent camping along the way. The plan is to ride from Minneapolis/St Paul area down to Estherville, IA - join in the folly of RAGBRAI until Cedar Rapids, and then turn north to ride back home.

My first RAGBRAI was back in 1985 when I was only 14 and somehow convinced my parents to let me go alone through a charter. (I think it helped that I am the youngest of 4 boys.) Packed up with my week's supply of goods, not a single cycling related article of clothing, and a $30 pup tent in an army duffel bag off I went. Hooked, I have done the ride nearly every year since. The first 3 years with charters, the next 7 with a support vehicle, and the last 20+ years self contained. I missed a year due to preparing for a move, another for weird infection, and a few years during the pandemic years.

I think I actually enjoy the ride down to Iowa and the ride home more than the actual organized portion of RAGBRAI itself.

Sounds like a great trip for you both!  I’ll keep an eye out for that Hubbuhubbuh between Estherville and Cedar Rapids.

2015 was my first.  It was a post retirement, knock an item off the bucket list thing that turned into a yearly trip.  Even rode virtually in 2020 but skipped last year and at 68, I may start the every other year thing…yeah right!  Hope to see you in Iowa!

Rusty,

I'm doing it again this year. Will either be on my Toyo Atlantis or my Waterford AHH. Look forward to seeing you and others.

That’s great to hear Julian…hopefully our paths will cross again. I’ll be riding either my TT Sam Hillborne or the Waterford Atlantis.

How are you doing RAGBRAI this year?   Are you a camper or ride with a team?  Maybe use a charter?

If enough are interested in possibly meeting one day, we could pick a day in advance and try to get a group picture in the meeting town or at Backpocket Beer garden.  Rivs In The Wild!

Rusty,

I'm riding with a friend and camping -- using Brancel Bicycle Charters.

Ken,

So sorry to hear about the stolen Atlantis and while I know you weren’t riding it this year at RAGBRAI, it would have been nice to see it there.

I’ll be on a 2TT Sam Hillborne and I will be looking for the Hubba between Estheville and Cedar Rapids.

i am hoping for a quick resolution on the Atlantis…and for decent weather for RAGBRAI week.
