I'm kind of surprised that no one has mentioned the comment in the May 30 newsletter about not being able to get an orange Sam or a green/silver Appaloosa for at least 648 days BUT that something in the middle might be replacing them next year.  Having a bike between a Sam and a Joe seems to be splitting a finer line but I'm stoked to see what they come with (or maybe come up with).  I recently bought a silver 51 Joe and it has really calmed down my bike buying desires because it is just so good.  I have a Sam, Joe, Cheviot, San Marcos , Rosco Mountain Mixte on order and a Quickbeam so I don't need another.  But I'm endlessly interested in what they come up with.

I thought the Mountain Mixtes were the ones coming out this summer. Didn't pick up that there was to be a third Run of them

1.  Go to www.rivbike.com
2.  Hover on News up at the top and select RBW Newsletters.
3.  Click on the most recent newsletter titled:  End of May Newsletter

Here is a LINK to it

Quote from that newsletter to address Drew:

"So if you're in the market for the roadish Sam or the toured-out Appaloosa, imagine them both going away and something in the middle replacing them next year. That's all we can say for now, and it might change. "

Quote from that newsletter to address Chris:

"
  • August: Rosco Mountain Mixtes - The big ones are all presold, but if you are interested in the medium one (like Roman's) you can contact ro...@rivbike.com.  He's taking deposits."
the RED TEXT in the newsletter hyperlinks to Roman's Staff Bikes page:  https://www.rivbike.com/pages/romans-staff-bikes

One of Roman's bikes is a Mountain Mixte to fit Roman.  Roman is 5'11" or so.  So it's a medium.  The other batch, which preceded this and that is all pre-sold, is Will's batch of huge Mountain Mixtes.  Those were/are for folks approaching 100cm PBH.  Roman's batch would fit folks Roman's size.  Like me!

I hope the medium mountain mixtes are as big of a hit as the extra large ones were, and that the success prompts a run of in-between-sized large ones.... And that i can afford to jump on it when it happens.

I know. My plan is to put in an order for a 650b hunq or Atlantis (still undecided) this week, but between adam's cheviot and the mountain Mixtes, it's making step throughs more and more desirable

I've got a Mtn Mixte from the first batch and my PBH is about 78.
The bike is a great fit so don't think you need to be Roman's size to fit one well.
I found myself just a tiny bit stretched out with standard Bullmoose bars but with Albatross and a 9cm stem, the reach is perfect.

I ride it all the time to run errands and cruise the salt marshes.

Given the sizing flexibility, it's a great bike for friends and guests.

Congratulations Bill!  I know you keep an inventory of spare parts.  Any idea of the drivetrain or wheels you are planning for it?  I'm getting one but haven't invested much time in thinking about the build.

Chris asked about my build plans:

Yes, you are right the shelves are stocked.  I won't have to buy much of anything.  I may buy an Albatross bar/stem, or I might do a drop bar build.  We'll see.

The drivetrain will be 3x8.  XTR rear der.  8sp Shimano barcons.  Whatever front der.  Ritchey Logic 172.5 in XTR grey 42/32/22.  This drivetrain did time on a Bombadil, and an Appaloosa.

The wheelset is XT parallax hubs, with retro-reflective Velocity Synergy rims.  I converted the hubset to BOLT-ON, just to be awesome, and I think bolt-on is ideal for these horizontal rear dropouts.  I haven't decided between cantilevers and V-brakes.  This wheelset had been on my Bombadil, and was earmarked for a Hunqapillar, but that slot is being filled by this mixte.

I too purchased medium bubbsloosa. It's not new per se just a second run of the same bike from last year. I almost bought it last New Year's Eve when they were trying to clear out inventory. When they did the re-run I got on the list. The price was tooooooo good. I justified as a purchase for my wife and I'm on the extreme end of the sizing. This way it gets more use then her last gen 53 cm salsa caseroll which is way too small for me but fun with the boscos I put on it. When we have kids this will be their hauler.

Bill - how many rivendell's do you own now?!?! Can I have a couple ;)

I don't get the appeal of the upright mountain mixte. I guess it doesn't have to be upright, but they usually seem to be setup w/ albatross bars. To be honest though, I don't see the appeal of upright bars for anything other than a bike used to go a few miles here and there for commuting/errands/all rounder type stuff. Anything else (long road rides, trail rides, mixed rides, etc) I want something more aggressive (drops/albastache/riser/etc). What's the appeal of an upright mountain mixte? Is it just to have something different? Is it better/worse when things get real on the trails? I'm sure there's a lot of opinions here ;)

Dstein: I think arm length and style of riding matter much in this equation. I'm a little guy with short arms and everything I ride has the bars level or higher than the saddle; the last time I rode drops they we're almost comically jacked up, but it felt great. But - as you addressed - I'm not a particularly aggressive rider, even if I'm out there for a few hours. So the upright position is best for me, although I wouldn't use pullback bars for singletrack, that's for common flatbars or the original Bullmoose.

I own two Rivendells , plus my portion of a tandem.  I have an 8 year old Samuel Hillborne and a newish Rosco Bubbe road bike that serves as my daily commuter.  This Mountain Mixte will make three.

Maybe you're like me and you've cycled through some buying and selling, though you had a hunqapillar and a homer for some reason.

I owned a Homer between 2010 and 2013 or thereabouts.  That was becoming my "serious" brevet bike, and I sold it to help do a full on no-holds-barred brevet bike build on a Rawland Stag (and that frameset has also moved along)

I have never owned a Hunqapillar.  I did own an Appaloosa for a little while, and sold that because the 650B Hunqapillar at Riv HQ was so awesome.  That slot in the stable was a knockabout camping bike that both me and my son can ride.  This mountain mixte fills that slot, so I will not likely be buying a Hunqapillar anytime soon.  Another way to put it is that this bike will be my "Manny bike".  Anytime we go out with Manny, this bike will go.

I also used to own a 700c Atlantis, and sold it to a neighbor who begged me to sell it to him.  I was going to replace that with a 650b Atlantis, and likely still will, but since Grant has something new coming for the Atlantis, I'm waiting to see what that is.

Did you get any hints as to the changes coming to the Atlantis?  Is this in addition to the new 650B versions?

I don't know anything specific beyond what's in the Blahg. After the Roadini there's something new for the Atlantis. I hope it'll have the new ball and socket seat lug.

The diagatube is great if you stop and start a lot and may save your jewels of rougher terrain. I don't have the mountain mixte but my Cheviot has map ahearne bars flipped and is quite comfortable. Upright but not too much so. My 2 cents.

For me, the main appeal of the mountain mixte is that it fits a variety of riders. With an ~80cm PBH, I'm in between a small and medium on many Riv models. If I were to go small on a Joe or under 50 on a Hunqapillar, I'd be too cramped to use swept bars, even with a 130mm stem. But if I were go up a size, then standover starts to be a problem. Lots of great 650b tire choices, fewer in 26". The mixte also appeals for child seats -- no kicking the little ones as you swing a leg over the bike. I also like the skepticism it, and the Bubbe project in general, elicits. It's a selling point for me :)

" not being able to get an orange Sam or a green/silver Appaloosa for at least 648 days "

I read this as those colors might not be available for those models, not that the models are going away.  The Appaloosa was such a swift seller (and loved by many, including me), I cannot imaging not bringing in more "soon."

I read it as "no more Sams or Appaloosas for 648 days, so if you like the ones we have now (in these colors), get 'em now."
