Not a Rivendell, but very definitely a son of Rivendell: The new Chauncey Matthews Road Bike for Road* newly shod with Rene Herse Naches Pass tires (in place of the default Elk Passes).

Since the local dirt here is too sandy for the ~40 mm Naches Pass tires, I'm not sure I'll keep them on. The Elk Passes make the bike more nimble and agile, the NPs at ~40/35 make the ride pleasantly cushioned (tho' the EPs, 29 mm at ~55/50 or lower are not bad either). 

* So named because I also have an earlier Road Bike for Dirt.

Thank you, my good man. I do enjoy it. It handles impeccably, and something -- the thin tubes? -- makes it noticeably easier to push a higher gear or maintain stroke against headwinds or up inclines.

It was rather a chore getting the builder to do it right -- he had to make a second fork, and there is still 1 more step to replace the rack, which is a silly design (Bilenky is to do this), but once that is done, the only other step will be to decide if 29 mm Elk Passes or 40 mm Naches Passes will be the default tire and, if the latter, probably have them set up tubeless.

Very nice, Patrick. Your running narrative formed an image in my mind that made your picture seem familiar. I just got my latest BQ (which contains the next tire test) an in the editor's note JH says now that we're all satisfied that wider tires with lower inflation pressures aren't a big energy waste, we can ride more comfortably. Hope you do on your Matthews Road.

Thanks. I just read the article too. My reason is the handling. And the tubes are also over 2X (150 versus 70 grams) as heavy, though that's less of a concern. But I don't need 42 mm tires for pavement -- the 29s are very smooth -- and 39s aren't sufficiently better than 29s in sand to make the bike dirt road-friendly.

Still, I'll put more miles on the NPs before deciding. If I do keep them I may set them up tubeless.

Thanks Rich and others. I just had a nice ~20 mile out and about (ending up at the grocery store 1 mile south of my house; the best kind of ride is a huge detour to a practical destination). I had put the fixed wheel back on it, the first time I've ridden the 48 X 17 fixed with the Naches Passes, and the bike felt very, very fast and smooth. Perhaps I'll keep the NPs on after all. Gearing is slightly higher at 72" than with the Elk Passes at 70", but the new frame seems to encourage torquing in a higher gear without bogging down or -- symptom I've experienced with other bikes with fixed drivetrains -- starting to cramp your quads after prolonged plugging away in slightly too high a gear.

I can't say that I feel any performance disadvantage with the Schwalbe SV 12 tubes (again, at 150 grams, over twice the weight as -- and with noticeably thicker walls than -- the SV 11 or whatever 26 X 1 / 650C X 23 skinnies). I may not bother to go tubeless.

Curious: does anyone have experience with Specialized's "Airlock" sealant? This is a cheap, old-fashioned Slime type of sealant that I was told works better in tubes at lower pressures -- I was told it is "like Slime but better;" thus I've used it in the Naches Passes at 35-40 psi. So far, so good; no goathead flats; but I wonder how it works in tubes at higher pressures, like the 50-45 I use in the Elk Passes? It contains little wee fiber bits, I understand, in a substrate that is claimed not to evaporate the way Orange Seal or Stan's does -- glycol?. Has anyone used it and can he or she say? It's half the price of the "better" sealants.

Short but coolish ride today

Today was warmer, really warm, about 73, unseasonal, I love it. I took the Bleriot out and stopped at a Tobacco Shed (although it is the end of the season and it is all closed up) and also shot a picture of the Rail Trail which is the end of my ride on the way home.

I have there Medium Acorn bag on this one, really nice but I to say the small with a small front bag is really nice, but this medium bag fits all of my stuff, 2 tubes, rags, tie down lashing, tools and has room for my camera and more.

Today I put some new SimWorks Super Yummy tires on my Atlantis. I wasn't sure how I'd like running a fat tire again, but I sure like the look of the Super Yummy so I went for it. Since I've owned this bike, I've run everything from a 1" Specialized Fat Boy Slick all the way up to this Super Yummy. I've also run drop bars, mustache bars, straight bars and riser bars. The tire is quite bouncy, so far I feel like it's a bit tractory and obviously not a go-fast tire, it looks rad, makes me think the bike needs a Bullmoose bar now. I hope everyone has a great day.

Looks awesome, Lucky!  I love the look of those tires (Simworks' branding is such a breath of fresh air in the bike world, totally unique and fun) and have heard they're grippy but certainly a bit slow on pavement.  I might try them on my Bombadil one day if I find myself riding enough dirt to justify it.  

Tomorrow I intend to have some pics of the new steed with bags when I try to ride up to the snow line (around 800m, I believe, I'm at sea level) for coffeeneuring. tbd!

Very nice, great color.  My Bleriot just got a refresh of another kind, went to visit a frame builder to have alignment and spacing made factory fresh.  Wheels getting RE-spaced as I type.  

I am riding 42mm BSP FROM 32’s and the wow effect tremendous .

Very nice. This sort of bike makes me want a lightish road bike with 42s or 45s for firm dirt and gravel -- only our dirt is sand, so no good.

How much (by weight) of a front load does the Bleriot tolerate, I mean before the handling gets bad?

Can anyone say offhand what the Bleriot's trail is? (I know, I can look it up, but don't want to right now.)

I notice the saddle all the way forward on a no-setback post and the short stem: is that how you set up all your road-type bikes? Not advising otherwise, just curious because I use a lot of setback and a short stem.

Rides SUPER well with a front load which was a surprise to me. Not sure how many lbs exactly, but here’s a pic of my one night camp set up. This was shot on Bolinas ridge trail on our way to Samuel P, and I had everything in the panniers and food up top. If I was going on a 2 day, I’d probably add a Carradice in the rear.

Most of the parts are used or spare-parts I had and that seatpost was a friend’s hand-me-down. The geo is weird so it worked for me. I’m a 90 PBH with shorter torso, so yes your assumption is correct. The seat does need to slide back a bit, just haven’t gotten around to adjusting. I’m also on 48mm tires which I highly recommend for sand and off road. I can fit 50’s for sure, but these, again, were a hand-me-down.

I may need to do an alignment check and refresh it after that trail 😂

How do you get 48’s on a Bleriot?  What brakes are you using? I cannot get 48’s on mine but 42’s are a pleasure. Again, love the color.

I like the way you've fit the pump over the frame bag. And that is quite a front load. Again, very nice. I use 60s (measure almost 62 mm) at 19 psi on our ancient acequia irrigation ditch roads and paths; after a dry spell the very fine, silty (next to the Rio Grand) soil breaks up and the 60s let me power thru 3", and float over shallower patches (and there are patches that I have to walk).

I wish I could fit 60's on this. my big tire bike will be either the Clem or a Joe if I can find one. Planning on testing the limits of their clearance one day. 

Joel, I'm not sure how I got these to fit other than just trying them. Is yours the same size? (59) My brakes are Paul Racer center pulls and fit up to 52? I think. I'm pretty certain I can fit 50s too but haven't tried. I wish Grant would resurrect the saluki/bleriot with bigger tire clearance, few more mounts and higher bottom bracket, it would be PERFECT. I had a third bottle mount added to the BB and a front rack mount to the drop out.

Very nice build.  I have the tektro side pulls before they became Silver brakes, that is the limiting factor.  I am ok with 42’s because the Sam wears 48’s but at least I know if I change brakes I could use 48’s although I think the bike would be too big for me then, just make it now with little clearance.

Here’s my Joe Appaloosa dream bike that I recently built up. I scored the frame on Craigslist from someone who never built it up, so it was new in box (thanks Rick!)

This was my first time ever building a bike from the frame up, which took a lot of trial and error and asking riv a million questions. But I decided to go big and build my dream rig and I couldn’t be happier.

I took it to Tahoe right after building it to give it a proper break in :)

For whatever reason, for the first while I had the Bombadil I never considered it for the position of my daily / commuter / around town bike. Probably because of its value. However, I had an "ah ha!" moment recently when I realized it was the exact blend of the Clem Smith and the XO-2 which I've been using for these purposes. I'll just need to carry a second lock is all!  Thanks Joe for the dream all-rounder! 

(Don't worry, for higher-risk locking up I use my Raleigh Twenty).  Sorry the photo is a bit blurry!  It was approaching dark..
