Hello All

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can tell me the correct Nitto rear rack size (32R/33R) for a Toyo built 56cm H/Hilsen with 650B wheels. Initially , I was thinking large (33R) but now I am just not sure. The older Toyo built Hilsen frame geometry has me questioning the optimal size. Again, much appreciated.

Cheers

Gunner

I don't have experience with either rack or bike, but wanted to share info I happened to read on Riv's website the other day. Hopefully it helps:

Two versions:

Medium 32R, for frames up to about 54cm.  Platform is 34.3cm x 13cm.

Large 33R, for frames bigger than that.   Platform is 35cm x 13cm.

Both work with 700c, 650B, 26" wheels. To know for sure what size is best, measure straight up from your rear dropout eyelet to the top of the wheel. If you get anything greater than 325mm (13") get the Large one. Otherwise, the Medium will fit best.

This is a Medium (32R) on a 55cm Cheviot, 650B x 42 tires. Ignoring the silly shorty wood fenders I had there because they don't help with this answer, you can see (sort of if you zoom) that there's not much room left for real fenders or a fatter tire. I think this rack would only work on your bike if you were super committed to skinny tires, no fenders and a certain "hug the wheel" look. I'd put a 33R on your frame.

Hi Gunner,
I have a 56cm Homer 650B and am running a Nitto rear rack but I’m not sure which model.
It’s one of the lighter ones that I think looks good and carries anything I need.
I’ll see if I can find out which model.

Nice setup.  Is the RBW saddlebag a MEDIUM or LARGE, & what is the saddle height in the picture??   One of the best pics for determine what bag fits my frame.

John,

I don't have that bike or bag anymore but judging from the single center strap I think that was the old Saddlesack Small (although it looks rather Not Small in these pics), seat height 69-70ish. Here's my Riv Custom, 54.2 cm, Medium Saddlesack on an RBW51 rack. I hope this helps.

I used a 32R on my 58 cm Atlantis but had to space it up with a couple of little extender goodies.  IIRC Rivendell spec'd the 33R for 58 & up Atlantis & the 32R for 56 & smaller.  In those days, the 58 & up had 700c wheels & the 56 & smaller were on 26" wheels.  Sounds like a call to Rivendell may be needed to sort it out.  Probably also depends on tire size & fenders.

Gentlemen

Thank you so much for all the helpful feedback. Dave if you do figure out your rack size it would be very helpful. I may just put a call in to our old friends in Walnut Creek. By the way, those are some fine looking rides you all have there.

Cheers

Hi Gunner,
I’ve had the rack so long, I can’t find who or where I bought it. Possibly from someone in the group.
It says Campee Rear Nitto on it.
Here’s another closeup so you can check the features.
Sorry I can’r provide more information.

Hi Gunner,

I suggest going with the 33R as I'm convinced the 32R was built with 26" wheels in mind. I've tried the 32R on the following bikes:
  • 51cm Appaloosa (650b) - Needed to run on low-mid braze on. Could be run on the dropout braze-on but contacts top of rear fender.
  • 47cm MIT Homer (650b) - Just clears with the fender and 42mm tires
  • 46cm Clem L - Perfect
  • Small Gus Boots Wilsen (650b) - Not even close
I ended up getting the 33R - currently on the Hillsen - and keeping the 32R on the Clem.

Much appreciate the feedback. According to the chaps in Walnut Creek the 32R should work just fine my H/H being a 650 wheel size. That said, I think you are spot on correct especially if one plans to include a fender option. After all when in doubt go big.

Cheers

Ed, can you measure from the bottom of the platform to the hole at the dropout on your 32 R rack, Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve,

On the 32R, distance from middle of hole on bottom mount tab to the bottom of the platform is ~33.5 cm. On the 33R, same distance is ~35 cm.
