I only recently read the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and just the other
week was re-reading book 1 when I noticed Fatty Lumpkin, Tom
Bombadil's little horse/pony. Anyone know why Riv calls their tire
the "Rumpkin" and not the "Lumpkin"?

Anyone out there riding the exceedingly appropriate setup of a
Bombadil on Fatty Rumpkins?

Cheers,

I glide along on Jack Browns, but have also enjoyed the LOTR references in
RBW offerings. My beautiful orange QuickBeam has my friends now reminding
me to "Think Ent."

I still think the Hunqapillar would have been well-named if it'd been called Mumakil....

Our household set of Fatty Rumpkins are currently on my wife's Yves Gomez.  She likes to call the bike "Fatty Bumpkin"

I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if the discrepancy between "Lumpkin" and "Rumpkin" was aimed to avoid legal issues that might inhere in LOTR copyright claims.

Whatever the case may be, I think Rumpkin rings better to the ear.

It was either that, or a typo by the supplier.  I read about it when it happened but the memory is hazy...

Totally agree! I had them on my Bleriot and loved them. Matter of fact they stayed when the bike got sold. They're still hanging in my garage with no 650b wheels in sight to put them on. I sure with they made them in 26"!!

This may be incorrect, but I recall that a friend who studies Japanese history once told me that in Japanese there is no "L" sound. If so, "Lumpkin" could become "Rumpkin". Also there is a picture of a horse on the sidewall of the Fatty Rumpkins, seeming to suggest that they were named after Bombadil's horse...

The geeky names Riv come up with are pretty amusing if you ask me. Sackville bags after the Sackville-Bagginses still makes me giggle.

Wasn't it Sam's pony?  I need to read them again I guess.  (yay!)

Sam's Pony was Bill, because it had been Bill Ferny's....

This is true, as far as I know.   I've had Spanish and Russian (wouldn't ever claim to speak either, tho'), my kids and father have taken German (my son's the best of us), but my dad also took Japanese and Chinese.  I wouldn't claim him fluent in either, but has a working familiarity with...

As to if such was the reason for the name shift, no idea.

Have to admit, I think a FAT Fatty Rumpkin would be an ideal tire. Fatter than the current.  I love these NeoMotos, but, they're not light;  A fatter Fatty Rumpkin that's lighter than these Neos would be a great tire.

Maybe nobody wants to ride 'lumpy' tires?
