Thanks everyone for sharing ideas for storing bikes vertically. I have set up a corner of my new garage with the bikes we ride the most.

In the picture, the rear wheels are all at about the same point, so you can see the difference in wheel bases. The Cheviot is, not surprisingly, definitely the longest single bike.

Thanks again,

Looks good, David! Is there a definitive vertical bike storage thread? I had a similar questions and nearly started a thread myself.

Thanks :)

Nice work David. Very tidy. 2 x 4 with appropriate hooks/hangars?

2 x 6 actually, with a sheet of 1/4" plywood cut up for the bumper boards. I used the larger size Park hooks for more lee way with the bulkier rim/tire combinations, such as the Bombadil.

David,

Thank you for the info. I've often thought of putting together a compact version of your storage rack. You've given me the impetus to push the project forward!

Best,
Rich in ATL

I must add bumper boards for my hooks; perhaps will do a major garage cleaning and painting and update this summer.

For hooks, I use these (at any rate, mine were Deltas), which mount very securely. They accommodate a 70 mm tire, but that is the max and you have to hang and de-hang carefully. For 50s, no problem at all.

The rubber sheaths tear, and I replaced them with sections of 1/2" garden hose.

For 6 months after my divorce I lived in a 1 bedroom apartment, and used the dining area to store my bikes. 2X4 bolted to wall, J hooks in 2X4, hanging bikes alternated up/down. I got 5 along a small wall, it couldn't have been much more than 6-7 feet, with the 6th, the commuter, propped up against the adjacent wall. It all worked out very well.

Aside: The kitchen had a large adjacent utility closet, large enough for full-size washer and dryer. I installed pegboard, work table, and there was just enough room on one end for a large metal shelf. All hidden neatly away by folding doors. OTOH, I had to use the living room rug for major repairs. 6 months later, thank God, I bought a house with a 2-car garage for me alone.
