Looking for a 31.8 quill stem. I saw the NItto UI-12, but am afraid with only 85mm of height above min insertion line, I am thinking of going through the custom route.
Anyone know of any custom stem makers that make quill stems for 31.8 clamps that is suitable for offroad use?

Most any frame builder who is comfortable also making stems can make you that stem. Off the top of my head I'd ask Mitch Pryor, Brian Chapman or Eric Estlund of Winter Cycles. Both routinely make very nice quill stems for their bikes, but I'm not sure if they'd do one-offs for another bike. Jeff Lyon built me a beautiful threadless stem; he might make you a quill one.

One thought: perhaps go with the stem adapter (e.g., Nitto makes some; I've also seen on Soma website) to use threadless stem?
Good luck!

Though you did not specify how much higher you need, nevertheless I take it you are aware that the UI-12 stem comes in both 72d and 90d options and even the 90d would not be tall enough ?
The VO quill adapter(also made by Genetic) btw to me is a good choice as it has a flange that prevents and possibility of slipping, and with certain stems can look good too.
Otherwise just google custom quill stems and you'll find a plethora of links.

most builders charge a bunch of cash for a custom stem.

The vo quill adapter has a nice height extension and looks great to boot! I use one with an old 14cm threadless stem with Boscos on my a. Homer Hilsen. Looks nice.

Thnx for suggestions. I believe the ui-12 is too short. I need more than 80mm above min insertion line. And thanks for the Google heads up, but that is the first thing I did, but didnt turn up much which is why I asked here.
Thnx for the ti cycles tip, looks promising. I'll check Bruce Gordon too but I need a face plate to put a Jones Loop bar on. I'll contact him and see if he does face plates.

I assume you've seen the Factory 5 stems that came out last winter, https://wearefactoryfive.com/products/f5-titan-stem? A friend bought one, finish was generally "ok" with a couple of very rough spots they missed polishing or had a bad cast. That's disappointing in a $100 part, but *much* cheaper than custom.

Eric Estlund's stems are gorgeous, durable and functional. I've bought three from him over the years. Wait is not too onerous.
Bruce Gordon's stems are more industrial looking but definitely will hold up over the long run.

Yes, I've seen these. Almost looks like they bent the metal and welded it at the bottom of the fold? The reach is a bit too long, and I've heard lukewarm reviews, mostly aesthetically positive, but not much in quality.
Thanks Matt for the recommendation, Winter might be too expensive, but I could try to not eat out on lunch this week and could stretch it. Will contact him soon.

Another expensive option is to have Brent Steelman make you a stem. He makes both threadless and quill, but he's not cheap:

Why not just use a technomic and get a regular 26.0 clamp sized handle bar? Im curious. Im assuming that you are talking about a stem that has a 22.2 quil and a 31.8 bar clamp for tgreaded steerer.

Because the Jones Loop bar only comes in 31.8

thx everyone. looks like i'm going with Joel at Clockwork Bikes. He's made a fork for me which I was very happy with, and he was able to source parts for a quill stem.
