Nice Rivendell, Goodrich and Sevens for Sale

Hey all. A local STL fellow just posted some bikes for sale locally. I just talked with him and am going to go look at them. There are a couple frames I'm not familiar with. Since this is where all the experts are, is there anything I should be looking for? I assume the grey AHH and the brown Ram are custom paint jobs. Is the orange one likely custom or an early Riv? And thoughts on the Goodrich? They all look to be fairly similar builds, and I'm wondering if nothing differentiates when I ride them, if I should consider anything else before buying (assuming the boss OKs it. Ha). I do see the brakes are different on the AHH models. Thanks, everyone.

There is definitely some detective work to be done on these bikes, since the seller doesn't seem to know anything about them.

The Rambouillet looks off, but in a way I think I can guess at explaining.  Ram's were by definition 700c bikes with medium reach brakes and fit 700x32 tires or thereabouts.  This one has very chubby tires and long reach brakes with pads at the very ends of the slots.  That makes me suspect that is a 650B converted Ram.  Rams came in even cm sizes, and that head tube height makes me guess it is maybe a 62cm.  It's maybe a 60cm,  Almost definitely not a 58.  

Assuming the orange Rivendell Custom is around the same size, those are probably 26" wheels.  That's my guess

The dark grey cantilever Hilsen is sort of off-menu, because it has cantilevers.  The wheels also look smallish.  My guess is that was actually the largest Canti-'Luki (Saluki), which would have been a 62cm.  Then, when the owner wanted a repaint, the Saluki decals weren't around, but Hilsen ones were.  The Saluki became the 650B Hilsen around 2010.  

Those are lovely lovely bikes.

Thank you, Bill. I got off the phone with him a bit ago, and he couldn't read the tire sizes (I did ask), but he said the standover was about 33 1/4" on the Ram. And he did say that he thought the bikes were bigger than what the owner would normally ride. (I took this to me traditional Riv-sizing." I was hoping to get there this afternoon, but I don't know if that will happen now. I am also curious about that Goodrich. Hopefully I get to report back soon.

I'm not super clear on what you are asking me to guess about regarding the Goodrich.  I don't know anything about Goodrich models, or if there is such a thing as a Goodrich model.  If they are all custom, then my guess is that the bike pictured with Goodrich decals is in fact a frame made by Curt Goodrich.  The lugs look "early Rivish", and I know Curt Goodrich made a lot of the early custom Rivendells.  Maybe it's an early Riv custom, Curt made it, and then the buyer wanted Curt to repaint it, with Goodrich decals.  

It doesn't look like a cyclocross race bike to me, like a Legolas, for example.  It looks more like a sport-touring rig, like maybe it's trying to be a lighter version of an early 2000s 700c Atlantis.

Ask him if he can read the names of the tires.  The two Hilsens and the Goodrich have Compass/Rene Herse tires on them with a clearly readable label.  The name of the tire guarantees the size.  Barlow Pass, Snoqualmie Pass,  Babyshoe Pass, etc.

Yes, I was trying to guess at what kind of custom Curt Goodrich had built. You're probably right that it's a sport tourer; I've always liked his 'own brand' work and would love to score one someday.

I own a root beer Ram, but it has S&S couplers and was repainted by Bilenky by its prior owner.

The orange one is possibly an Allrounder. They had horizontal rear drop outs Looks like a nice collection.

Buy the Goodrich if it fits and can handle the tires you want to run. They are rare and built by a true craftsman. The quality of Curt's builds are second to none and most custom builders would attest to that and they have a ride to match. I know because I had Curt build me a 650b bike that would fit 42's back when the 650b's were just starting to become popular. I've had at least 6 different Riv's. All fine bikes but not as fine as a Goodrich. You won't be disappointed and if you are you'll certainly be able to find someone to take it off your hands.

As a point of fact, the All Rounder might very well have been made by Curt Goodrich.  If not him, then Joe Starck or, maybe Richard Sachs.  If the builder is an important consideration to you (and I'd agree it might as well be), then you won't go wrong with that one. 

The Ram is one of the earlier ones - probably orange prior to the re-paint (and brake mod?).  It and both of the Homers (or Homer and re-painted Saluki) are Toyo built.  Also very high quality.  (The lugs are the giveaway)

Good point. I didn't even think about the All Rounder. I actually tried to get Joe Starck to build me a bicycle after he had quite the business. He refused to pick the torch back up and was adamant about never building again. There is not a bike in that whole lot I wouldn't like to own.

What a collection!  All look very clean too.  Acknowledging the keen eyes here, it's too bad someone is not on hand to help the seller offer accurate information about each bike. (Is everyone looking at flights to Saint Louis??)

I checked these out today and picked up the blue Homer. My first riv! I've got some stuff to change on it but i am super excited.

The grey 'homer' is indeed a 650b canti bike. Prob a saluki as Bill suggested. Paint was really nice.

The Ram also had 650b wheels with long reach brakes at the bottom of the slots. Also had nice, presumably custom, paint.

The Curt was a beautiful bike. Had 700x38 tires with fenders. Looked like it would clear a little bigger with fenders. Maybe a 42 or 45 without.

The Riv custom had 26" wheels. Tires that were on it were 35 or 38. Again could probably fit a 42 or 45 but not much more.

All the bikes are in the 60cm range with top tubes between 57-59. The seller, Steve, was super nice and I'm sure would be happy to provide whatever info someone may be looking for if you give him a ring. He didn't seem keen on shipping the bikes because of how big of a pain it is (i feel him on that), but I bet he'd be open to delivering to a local shop to arrange shipping.

I just met Brian and he beat me to the punch!!!! I guess that's what I get for sharing info here.

I think most of you got things down with a couple questions:

1) Custom painted 650b Ram. I think he wants to keep it.

2) Orange custom? I could not find a serial number. Definitely 26" wheels. Photo attached.

3) Curt Goodrich has 700x38

4) Blue AHH. I only saw it being loaded up.

5) The grey 650B AHH with canti brakes. I think it's a Waterford build based on the serial, and I could not find rack mounts, only fender mounts. I'd love some thoughts on that. Picture attached.

Seller's phone is a little weird. My calls went to voicemail straight away.

Was lucky enough to have my Road built in 2001 by Goodrich (CG1098),  which is stamped on the bottom bracket shell. Base price was 2150.00....a bargain😊

Hard to say who built the AR, because the bottom bracket shell doesn't have that info stamped on the shell that I can see...maybe it's from the period after Waterford in the late 1990's when Riv was building more customized frames without advertising and using other tubing besides Reynolds 753. I think they were working with Match and maybe Joe Stark as well. Then in 2000-2007 they were swapping frame-building duties between Stark and Goodrich

I did reach out to Curt Goodrich a few days ago. He remembered the man he built the bike for, but could not locate the geo or any other info. I really wanted to buy that bike, but the family budget office didn’t authorize the expenditure. I hope “settling” for the canti AHH will work out well for me. 

I believe all the Rivs, minus the brown Ram are sold. I think unless Steve gets an offer he can’t refuse, he will keep it.

Thank you to everyone who gave their thoughts on this topic. I look forward to sharing some nice bike photos soon, but first I need to find a saddle. I’ve liked a Swift in the past. Recently got a c17 but am not in love. Anyone have a b17 collecting dust? Please DM me.

FYI, I think is the same guy who was selling a couple Riv frames for a deceased friend back in November. A Roadeo custom painted sage green and a Heron custom painted by Joe Bell. If so, the seller has a very active ebay account selling vintage motorcycle stuff and has a good seller rating.

I can’t help with the story of the Goodrich, but I can say I have a randonneur that he made and it’s lovely, definitely my favorite ride. I agree the triple and braze-ons for a rear rack but no low rider fronts or 3rd water bottle boss seem to mean sport touring. I bet it’s awesome.

Curt’s no longer building frames, but I bet if you emailed him with the serial number he could let you know the dimensions and the build intentions. Also, to decipher if it’s under his brand or riv, mine has CG in the serial number. So that might be a good, simple clue. 

Not sure if I can help more, but it’s  cool bike and there’s not many out there.
