The gnats are in full season here in IA, and they're really not that tasty.  Does anyone have a suggestion for a nice, breathable face mask?  I currently use a handkerchief tied bandito-style, but it's not as breathable as I'd like.   And everything I find online is aimed for cold weather.

Please don't tell me to just close my mouth, breathe through my teeth, or just suck it up and eat them.  I've tried those methods, believe me.  :-)

Thanks,
Tim

I nose breathe all the time (except on climbs over 10,000 feet, where bugs are not a huge issue), and even then gnat clouds can give a lot more texture to the air than is preferable. But that's only an infrequent and short lived issue in the Colorado Rockies. Short of a "no-see-um" mesh bandana it's hard to know what would accomplish the task and be more breathable than a cotton one. Good luck!

WIth abandon,
Patrick

I think I'm gonna pick up a so-called "buff", a neck/head tube made of stretchy thin material.  I have a cold right now, so my nose is exit-only, no easy breathing.

On our recent So Cal Riv ride in the San Bernardino mountains, a couple of the guys used full coverage bug nets.  They were able to don & doff them as we hit patches of nats, then clear air.  An outdoor gear store is a likely source.  Maybe Hugh or David will chime in with what they used.

Hi Tim this is what I used and it worked great: http://www.rei.com/product/799982/sea-to-summit-head-net-with-insect-shield You can sort of see it draped over my hat in this pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/8836388676/ I was able to breathe really well and I was able to removed and stuff into a pocket while riding. Highly recommended.

Best,

I use something similar. Attached, photo of me, coyly shy of the camera:

I've worn head nets when in the deep woods and at survival school in Spokane.  I'd never considered one for cycling; they seemed unweildy.  I should pick one up from a local surplus store.

I ended up ordering a pair of these "buff" scarves:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cycling-Bicycle-Multi-function-Sport-Magic-Head-Scarf-Band-Turban-Face-Mask-Veil-/310647309688?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item485405c578  They handed these out to RAGBRAI riders last year, so I'll probably end up with one or two at the end of my first RAGBRAI this year.

Direct from China.  Boo.  But cheap.

I picked the American flag pattern.  F yeah!

What Hugh said, although Patrick's version would be a nice back up option.

Cheers,

Buy some cheap mesh at a camping store or some place and cut into a square and make a "bandanna" out of it and wear it bandido style :)

There is no fabric that is going to breath well enough .

Garth,

I disagree the bug net I wore was fine to breath through while in exertion.

Best,

Mexican Luca Libre Mask. All the way. Pretty sure you can get it at the Pop-up Store...

I dunno Manny - those seem to cover everything BUT the mouth and nose.

+1 for the Buff - I have a few of these which I use when out in the sun on the boat.  Or when it's just frosty enough to require a thin windbreak.  They actually do cover well.  Not sure if they are really all that different from a bandana thickness... but, never really had a problem breathing through one.
