Legendary indie rock band (and one of my favorites) Pavement was on the Colbert show on TV yesterday. I smiled when I noticed the bass player is rocking a Blue Lug Bike Shop shirt. I know he loves Rivendell bikes because I met him on the street last year riding his Appaloosa, and I stopped him to talk bikes for a minute and to tell him I loved his work. Check it out here:

In case you missed it, here's Wired Magazine's article about Blue Lug:

Big fan here (have been since college back in the mid-90s - so that'll date me). Very cool to see Mark rocking a Blue Lug shirt. I had no idea he was a Riv guy, or a bike guy for that matter. I will say, this has never been a favorite song of theirs for me. Apparently it ended up getting boosted by Spotify's algorithm a short while back and became popular with a new generation of younger fans, so I'm guessing that's why they chose to play it here live.

I would've much preferred a deep cut from Wowee Zowee or Watery Domestic, IMHO.

I didn’t know about the new pavement film they were promoting.

“Thanks Owners Bunch!”

Pavement is always good, I"ve been lucky enough to see them live a couple times and Malkmus alone and with the Jicks a few times as well. His pre-Pavement band, Silver Jews, always takes the "best-of" IMHO, but it's fun to see 'em still doing it (and in style!).

I was fortunate to attend a kick-off for the wider release of 'Pavements' last night, at the (San Francisco) Roxie Theater - with Ibold and Stairs holding court for an on-stage Q&A after the show - despite some initial confusion on "how can they be both in NYC and SF at the same time!?" (answer: the magic of television, folks). Good to learn there is significant overlap between the cults!

A pretty flipping rad film, indeed... a multi-dimensional, temporal-shape-shifting deep-dive into lore from a lost era. Helped with filling in / highlighting the empty nooks and blank spots in my memory of the 90's. I've got to be out there somewhere in that crowd seen during the Lollapalooza 1995 (Shoreline Amphitheatre / Mountain View) footage - no mud for us on that hot summer day. Catch the film, it's well worth it.

What about the voice of Geddy Lee, how did it get so high?

Man, I dropped them after they sold out with Slanted and Enchanted. I hold on to my Perfect Sound Forever and Demolition Plot vinyl as tightly as I do my Quickbeam! (Tongue is in cheek.)

Hope you all are well!

I actually wore out my Pavement cassettes way back when. I never thought of Silver Jews as a Malkmus band, but I maybe you're right! David Berman was a genius and American Water is an all-timer for me. SM is like a shark; always moving. The Hard Quartet album was one of my favorites from last year. I'm excited to learn about this new film and hope I can figure out how to watch it.

For SM fans, this site has been great to find.

Thought the Pavements song @Michael linked to was sort of meh...but will give a listen to other works suggested. Can't judge the band on just one song

Have discovered these musicians about a year ago:Dazzling guitar but they are all very fine musicians. Hypnotic

Mdou Moctar from 2022

Ryan-

Yeah, like I mentioned earlier, the song they played on Colbert is a head-scratcher. Far from any of their songs that anyone would consider a good entry point. I’m bad at links with my phone, but to suggest some better tracks that showcase Pavement’s aesthetic, I’d recommend a sampling:

Gold Sounds
Stereo
Summer Babe
Cut Your Hair
Rattled by the Rush

Here’s a good Spotify playlist with these tracks in it:
…and Mdou Moctar is fantastic! I love anything that is remotely AfroBeat adjacent. A good buddy of mine does most, if not all of his album cover artwork.

As a "young" but longtime Pavement fan it warms my heart to see the crossover here, looking forward to the film!
