So, I got this inherited Clementine and I’m all in a tizzy over it. I have two bikes and I don’t know how to have two bikes. Old Two-Bike Leah. It’s catchy.

As I was saying, I’m trying to figure out how to have two bikes. You can only have one favorite (don’t argue; it’s true) and right now it’s that aqua Clementine. It’s absolutely sublime and if you need proof that the Clementine is superior, it can be summed up with this: my sister and I fight over it. Ok, I’m exaggerating, but one of us has to ride the Betz and the other gets the Clementine and we don’t even pretend to hide our preference anymore. If you want to know more than that, message me and I’ll tell you why we are rabid over my Clementine. But the bottom line is the Betz is amazing and the Clementine is heavenly.

So, I think Clementine is the primary bike I’ll be riding. When we start our school commute, I’m trying to figure out the configuration for racks and bags. I think I want the Nitto Big Rear Rack with Backabike bags. I may also want a Happisack in the same color. The current color offerings are not ideal for this happy, aqua bike. Can I get your opinions here?

1. Forget Olive. I don’t like it.
2. I like the gray grid, but the green edging bothers me. It’s the wrong green.
3. My favorite iteration of the bags is the blue, but it might clash with the aqua. It may be awesome and unexpected, though.

I’d love to hear if learning to use and love 2 bikes was stressful for you, as well as what you think I should do about the bag situation. Is blue and green overkill? I’d like to finally sew on some fun patches I’ve been saving. I want the bike bags I put on the Clementine to be keepers. Lots of pressure to get the color right!

Thanks,
Leah

Old Two-Bike Leah..I like it! 🙂

Man, I'm so surprised how much that aqua color pops every time I see your Clementine. To be honest I have NO memory of the first gens coming in that shade, it's gorgeous!

I have two categories for frame/bag matching: Contrast and drop-down. On a contrast bike I might do something like white with red bags, or black with grey. Drop-down is a more similar shade that "drops down" from one frame color to the bags. In your case I see a bright greenish blue in the frame that would drop down to the darker blue of the bags. Plus the bags would pick up the dark blue in the decals, I think it would be smashing!

Yeah, being a two-bike gal is tough. The only real solution is to get 3-5 more bicycles and spread the love out. This solution is guaranteed to fix the two-bike dilemma. However, if for some unfortunate reason  this fix is not in the cards at the moment, two excellent bikes such as you have will tend to oscillate around your affections, with one and then the other being more or less in your fancy. This is also guaranteed.

As for bag colors, the blue all the way. It's fun and not as steeped in "tradition" and looks fantastic with the aqua. The actual bags may have a tinge more red in them than your photo would suggest. Unless each run is slightly different. But blue, for sure. They look great with purple, too!

Joe,

Thanks! I, too, love the color of the Clementine more than I imagined. I thought it was a bit much next to my classy Betty Foy and Mom’s subdued lite sage Cheviot, but that aqua has WON ME OVER. I like your theories on frame and bag colors - they make sense to me.

Mark,

Guess what? That photo shows the blue in its true color. It’s the new one they call Royal, and I have a Clembasack in that shade. It’s a great color.

More bikes? I would tip over. But ask me again if the Anniversary Mixte ever happens. I think I could sell the Betz for it, but maybe not.

I admit to a high level of anxiety imagining something happening to this bike. I love the name Clementine and this paint job and now I wish I had one extra one just in case. It’s scary to prefer something this completely! I do hope the Betty can find itself my favorite once more.

Gotta run for now! My sister and I are biking a 20 mile ride called The Chain of Lakes.
Thanks for weighing in! Anyone else?

Hi, Leah!

I LOVE the color of your Clementine and am so happy for you loving that bike.  It must be really super fantastic to already have you make up your mind that it gets top billing, above Betz, something I never thought would happen, you love it so much.

The grey and the green bags are nice, but the blue has personality, like you!    I suggest that one (BTW, if I didn't already have a bag for my AHH, it would be a blue one).

Also, (this was going to be a surprise, but since you're talking about putting patches on your bags), yesterday afternoon I ordered both NE and West Coast 25th Riv Anniversary ride patches for you and me.  They're coming from two different locations, so I had them sent to me.  I'd then pack them up and send them to you.

My favorite bike is the one I tinkered on last.
Unless I made the bike worse. That’s true even for my $25 Ross fixie over my Rivendell or custom bikes, if it’s freshly tuned or hot-rodded.

The blue bag is the best option with the aqua bike, in my (professional artist) opinion.

The critical key to bike and bag matching is mud and dirt. Remove fenders, ride in mud and dirt, and it all takes care of itself from there. Grin. However, since you have mud prevention devices on there, blue is the way to go.

I'm sure there are many on this list who have way more than just one (or even just two) bikes.  I myself have 4: a Riv road bike (Rambouillet), an old early 70's Fuji Finest road bike (rebuilt and reconfigured as a Resurrectio), a single-speed MTB (Surly 1x1), and a dual-boinger Trek MTB (which I inherited, too).  And I ride them all, according specialized needs and usefulness.  The Ram gets ridden on trails when conditions are fairly good and for longer rides; the Resurrectio gets ridden on the trails when conditions are poor and for shorter rides; the Surly is used as a kind of general purpose utility bike to run errands, etc.; and the Trek gets ridden during the late Fall and early Spring months when trail conditions are pitiful.  In other words, each one has a kind of niche usefulness.  You could do the same with those two Riv bikes you now own.

As far as packs and bags go, I'd recommend picking a neutral color that goes with anything.  Black is my favorite for that.

I can relate to the fidgetousness of having more than one bike. It feels like hubris.

Anyway, the cyan+dark blue bag combination is good. It was imprinted on my brain by heavy use of Wordperfect 5.1.

Roberta! You are always so darn sweet. Would you believe that I had thought of doing the same for you? Well I did, and then I got distracted because you know I’m still at my sister’s. You are the most delightful friend. Thank you. 💗 I’ll find some way to surprise you right back.

DP, I’m getting muddy out here; you’d be proud. Not your caliber of muddy, but my bikes are usually spotless in Vegas, so a little mud on the tubes and under the fenders is big stuff for Two-Bike Leah.

Mike, I laughed out loud. Word Perfect? I hadn’t thought about it in years, and you are right, those are great colors.

I’m so glad most of you voted for blue - I liked those bags best but wasn’t sure how they would look on the aqua bike. I think blue is going to be a winner. Also, wait until you see my helmet for the Clementine; it’s a perfect not-quite-navy that goes with the Clementine decal.

My sis and I put another 16 miles on the bikes doing the “Chain of Lakes” ride that folks here in the Twin Cities like to do. We got a coffee stop in there as well, so basically, all is good and well in Leah Peterson’s world.

Thanks for chiming in! You guys are so fun.

How are you liking the sprung saddle on the Clemintine?  I know your Betz doesn't have one with springs.

My Joe A went from fabulous to super fabulous when I changed my B17 to a sprung Flyer (the top is the same).   I don't hear it squeak any longer (it still squeaks sometimes, but I just don't notice it).

Roberta, I love the saddle but for the noise it makes. It’s creaky. I spent money this year getting the copper-riveted Select for the Betty and may switch. Or put my old B68 (springless version of the B67) on. I am considering the copper river version of your saddle, however. But first, the blue bags! ❤️

I did it. I got the bags after weeks and weeks of hemming and hawing (I wanted them in Royal even before I had the Clementine). But, Rivendell has no Nitto medium rear rack in stock. The current rack on the bike is the loathsome Pletscher, and it has no rails, and I am planning to sell it. Wonder if the Nitto Big Back Rack from Betty can be moved to the Clementine... (See, I didn’t have these stressors when I had but one bike!)

Leah, you are too harsh on the Pletcher! It is the perfect rack for the Clems! And in any case, consider:

It's functional, and has useful accessories, like the pannier bars and the light mount. And it has the rat trap! and the tombstone folds down. Plus...

IMG_1835.JPG

Once completely bedecked with baggage, you can't much see it! Still, if that doesn't do it...

IMG_9984.JPG

Paint it white! It will look spectacular with the royal blue bags and the aqua frame!

Another reason to have multiple bikes is so you have a backup to ride if one is in the shop. Didn’t that happen with your Betty earlier this year?

Mark - did you have the Backabike bags on the Clem rack? Did you buy and use the pannier rails for that Clem rack? Wondering if they work with the Backabikes and if I should order them or just rig the Backabike to the top of the rack...

Thanks!

Leah, The Clem rails work well with the backabike bag, and free up the top rack for load without interfering with the panniers. And Mark's correct ... the rack isn't seen with the bags on, and even less with a top load in addition. The only reason I can see for going Nitto instead is load assurance of Nitto, which seems engineered to handle more than the Clems, though rated the same for each, I believe (using different criteria). That is why I have Nitto on my bikes, because I jounce a load on rocks and roots at speed. Me lassies take a more sensible load and speed than I do. Grin.

Hi Leah. Yes and Yes. You can see the bags on the Clementine in the middle photo of my last post in this thread. I purchased both the pannier rails and the tail light mount for the Clem rack. May get the pump mount as well. I recommend the pannier rails as they position the bags a bit lower. I've carried some heavy stuff in the bags on this rack, no problem. Currently on my Trekendell, which is awaiting an overhaul and re-imagining this fall. If the Nitto is your desire and will make you happy, definitely go that way. But props to the Clem Rack, it's useful, and I think, attractive in an industrial, no-frills way.

The Backabike bags in “royal” came from Rivendell! Enclosed is a photo in the sun and a photo in the shade so you can see how the color looks. The Bananasax bag is the old blue, and I think I’m actually going to have my Randi Jo bag on the bars instead. I think I like the color combo? It’s not as classy as the gray would have been, but the blue is a prettier color of bag and with the aqua frame it’s definitely unique. No one will confuse me for anyone else! Lastly, my two bikes side by side a couple of weeks ago when my sister and I rode them on a Minneapolis bike highway. Those Minnesotans have it made. My sister’s Clem L arrives in the upcoming presale in chameleon green!

I love my Clementine an unhealthy amount. I have a few things left to make it perfect, but I’ll get right on them when I get back to Vegas. On the list of ideas: New front rack, maybe a Nitto rear rack (we’ll see), fix the fender line (I got splashed at every puddle!), new pedals (I ordered from Riv and have them, just need them put on the bike), and maybe....dyno lighting. Not sure about that yet as I almost never night ride, but my Cygo lights are awful - 3 of my 4 have gone bad on me with minimal use. Maybe I should start a new thread about dyno lighting as I know next to nothing about it...

Anyway, it’s wild fun to discuss new bike details with you all. Thanks for chatting with me!

Love, love, love the color combo!  This is classy with *personality.*  The Randi Jo bag with its vibrant colors is an added bonus. I have a feeling that you'll be loving this bike even more tomorrow when you ride with these bags.  Cheery-ness will be surrounding you.

I think a Riv safety triangle from the back seat would add the perfect splash of complimentary color. I also sense that they do get some drivers to think just the teeny-tiniest bit. Which is something. Anyway, I have a couple in circulation and rarely pedal from home without one. Cheery, too!

Pretty bike and pretty bags.

Yes, do indeed complement the bike and build with a dynamo system. You can go full-SON/Edeluxe, and they're pretty indeed; but a cheaper -- by about half -- alternative is SP hub and Lumotec headlight. I've had no problems with 2 SP hubs, and my older Lumotec IQ (it has a sensor function) gives a brighter, wider beam than that of my Edeluxe 1. (For the record: The Lumotec IQ is powered in fact by a BioLogic dynamo designed for small-wheel folders -- both are on the Dahon -- but I read that BioLogic is made by SP -- am I right?)

Fantastic!

Unless my monitor is way off, you were correct, it looks like the latest blue Sackvilles are a different blue--more yellow, with the original leaning toward a red bias. Looks awesome with the aqua-tine! (And the rack looks so pretty and useful. Wait till the first time you clamp something down with it !;^)

Mark, I’m kind of coming around to the idea of the Pletscher. I used the mousetrap yesterday and it was a cool feature, even I have to admit. And you really don’t see the rack under the bags, it’s true. I need the pannier rails! I’ll order them when I get back to Vegas end of this week. The blue is different and better, I think. I love it with the gray accents on the bag. I’ve looked at many other brands of panniers and there are none so classy as the Sackville line. Rivendell has the market cornered on THAT.

That's a great looking Clem!

Those fenders may come in handy upon your return .

I saw a news story a few days ago about grasshopper swarms around Vegas.

Fenders could come in handy for deflecting grasshopper parts should you have to crunch through some of them.

Clean up afterwards might be a bit gross.
Ha!

Enjoy both your bikes.
