Hello RWB Owner's Bunch! I've been peeking around since I was ready to make my first Riv purchase. I have a few bikes that I love and didn't want too much overlap, so I went with the Roadini. I have a 1993 Klein Quantum which was my father's and is too big for me, but it is fun to ride every once and a while, just not for too long. So I'm going to work on selling that soon. I really wanted an Atlantis but with having a Surly Troll, 1983 Specialized Stumpjumper and a 1983 Ross Mt. Whitney; which I love all 3, I didn't want them to get jealous ;)

When I was ready to make my purchase, I called up RBW and Will answered the phone. I told him I was ready to buy/build a complete through them and off we went! I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Here's pictures and a full list of the specs for those interested:

Very nice build. How do you find braking from the hoods with the non-aero Dian Compes?

I recall riding my brother's Klein mtb back in the '90s, with road wheels (Fatboys and road gearing): stiff as a girder, but gave the impression of immediate response to pedal input.

Yoooooo. So damn cool! I’m just getting into lugged steel and Riv bikes. Never knew much about bikes until very recently (last couple months). I just barely got through finalizing the purchase of my first one two days ago (prior to that, the guys at Riv we’re holding it for me on a deposit). Anyway, I went with a blue Roadini too. It was actually the pre-built web special that had been up for about three months. Budget is a pretty big issue for me at this point in time, but I really couldn’t wait to get riding so this deal was PERFECT for me. Luckily it was the right size. At any rate I’m planning on customizing it a bit here and there as time goes on, and I was pretty much envisioning an almost identical build to what you have done. I especially love the crankset you went with! Thanks for sharing man

Looks almost Eroica ready! Awesome bike and awesome color. Hopefully it will provide lots for smiles for many miles to come (without upsetting your other bikes).

Great looking bike! Makes me want to upgrade some things on my Ram and start riding it again.

Nice build. I love the crankset and non-aero brakes. Enjoy the ride.

Will warned me to not count on breaking from the hoods if I went non-aero, but it really isn't bad at all. Most aggressive breaking is in the drops but when I'm up on the hoods, it is mellow.

Congrats! It was a tough decision between the XCD, VO, and Rene Herse. I'm happy with the SunXCD. I wanted all silver components which made it tough too and being that SunXCD had the RD, that helped sway my decision toward the cranks too.

Very pretty! Out of curiosity, what is the supposed issue braking from the hoods of non-aero levers? I brake from the hoods with aero and non-aero without realizing there was some difference to be concerned with. I guess I prefer aero simply to avoid catching cable with my hands while changing hand position.

The pivot is located in a different place, and you have a lot less leverage than with the aero style.

Æro levers are generally an improvement over the older type. The pivots are located differently, making it possible to get fairly serious braking from the position where the rider's hand is on top of the lever hood. Non-æro levers would permit the use of this position for gentle deceleration only.   -- https://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_aa-l.html

I find the "difficulty braking from the hoods on non aero brakes" to be much Ado about very little. Anybody with fairly reasonable hand strength can pull that lever toward the handlebar from either position. The brake doesn't know where your hand is. I wonder if maybe there were levers way back in time that were extremely hard to pull, and that's where this truism came from. I brake from the hoods on non aero brakes all the time with zero issues.

YMMV.   I love the look but hate the feel.

I used "non-aero" (at the time, we just called them "brake levers")
levers on my 64 Dunelt, and for 20 years on my P15 Paramount.  I
switched to aero style levers in 1991 and haven't braked from the drops
since.  It's all brake from the hoods except for the bikes with 'cross
levers under the bar top.

When I got my Moulton in 2002 I built it up with non-aero levers and
found the braking from the hoods totally unsatisfactory - far too much
effort required, and the best I could get was as Sheldon has it,
"gentle".  I switched the bike to aero levers and wouldn't consider the
old-style levers again, never mind how nice they look.

Sorry, what’s “the RD”? “VO” is Velo Orange correct?

The rear derailleur is SunXCD SXRD34M.
For the cranks, I was referring to the Velo Orange Grand Cru's.

Works great with the 11-32 cassette and dura ace bar end shifters! Only about 100 miles on the bike so far but no issues yet.

Oh cool thanks for that additional info. I'd definitely like to change my over to a similar look in the future. I was possibly thinking of going 1 X 10 for a nice clean look too. That will have to be down the road though. For the short term I'm most likely just gonna switch out the current pedals with some MKS Sylvan's w/clips.

Just in case you were interested, this is my setup currently, https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/nDOG9F38ZYw

I'm really loving my Roadini :)

My objective was the retro/vintage look with all silver components. Front Deraileur is an exception because I couldn't find one that could handle the range without needing a braze-on/adapter.

Did you try a vintage derailleur? I use a Suntour Cyclone on my Atlantis to shift a 24/38/46 triple and it has the range. I’m thinking there are a number of different models that would do the trick. Is the seat tube too fat on the Roadini?

I think the seat tube is 31.8mm. Wanted to do the complete build through Riv, so I went with the CX70, which I have no complaints about. In the back of my mind, I knew I could grab something vintage off eBay and throw it on there if I wanted to.  Mainly I knew the second the bike arrived, I would want to be out riding it and didn't want any downtime if something didn't work out. Will leave everything as is for now.

I love it! Classical build with a neat mixture of modern components. I also have a couple of of early Stumpies...a TIG frame ‘82 and a lugged ‘83 Sport. I will get to try out non-aero levers for the first time once I finish freshening up an 82 Sequoia. How well do those Bon Jon Pass tires fit..do you have plenty of clearance with the regular reach sidepulls? I’ve been curious to see how big of a tire the Roadini will fit.

I added some clearance pictures for you.
