Up for sale my almost new Copenhagen Wheel from Superpedestrian - the app says I only logged 68 miles on it for the less than one year since I bought it.

I had big plans for my electrified Atlantis, but to be honest with Covid my commute was gone and I ended up riding other bikes more. On top of that I moved to a new place where I can't roll my bike into a safe storage and bringing the bike down the stairs to the basement isn't very functional.

It retails for $1,749 but you can have it for $1,100 plus shipping.

Size 622mm / 700c / 29er
Road gearing (11X28)
Rim Silver

I'd be interested if I hadn't just spent a large amount (a really large amount!) on another SA hub.

I think Joe Bernard uses one of these? Or else, someone else on this list? I'll be interested to hear how they perform -- ease of use, reliability, range, degree of control, etc., as well as how they compare to other electrification products.

I love(d) mine and I'm missing it greatly as it got passed along to my 82 year old father who's have a blast on his Copenhagenized Clem.

My commute went away with COVID as well.

IMHO they're excellent for everything you can do in less then 10 miles, 15-20 if you're more judicious about using a lower assist level/don't have heavy loads or very steep hills.  These things can be set to cruise at 20+ miles an hour and for me that was always my default setting as it's FUN FUN FUN FUN FUN.  Soul replenishing fun.

It's incredibly natural feeling compared to most other systems I've ridden.

Hope that helps!

I'll second Alex's take:  just the right amount of assist (not too much), not much range, great for most trips/errands around town.  Adds ~16 pounds to a bike.  Having tried lots of bike options, the Copenhagen wheel is what I've kept as it is the most fun and bicycle-like of them all.  Great for errands + commuting + not driving  --  with all the fun of biking with less sweat.  I have lots of pedal bikes for the other kind of fun rides on the weekend, etc.

Better with a stout frame (my set my partner up with a Hunquapilar + Copenhagen wheel while I have a Surly Ogre) and large volume (45mm+ ?) tires -- I got several pinch flats with 700x 38mm Schwalbe almotion TL tires

Yes to all of the above, the Copenhagen Wheel feels very natural since there is no accelerator button or lever, it just assists as you pedal - it's weirdly magical.

So there isn't much to control other than the setting in the app which you do at the beginning of the ride.

I believe Joe Bernard had the same wheel but was looking for a 650b model?

Thanks Alex, Jay, and Max. I think I'd like the natural or at least very simple power transfer, and I'd certainly like the compact package. But 10 mile range, even 20, would be too short for the types of errands I have in mind, which would be 20 to 35 mile outs-and-backs; say going to the Oriental grocery store downtown. Too bad.

FWIW Superpedestrian reorganized last year and discontinued the Copenhagen Wheel and is concentrating on electric scooters. We bought two of these, one 26" and the other 700cc. Beware, extremely poor design of attaching the spokes to the hub and even poorer customer support hasten the end of a once promising solution to e-retrofit. Hostel Shoppe and others are selling off remaining inventory for $1150. While the MSRP is $1750, when we got ours two years ago, recumbent dealers were selling them for $1300 with free shipping.

Woof.  Excellent article.  Having been a bionx dealer and a Copenhagen Wheel dealer, it's all too familiar.

Sadly, customer support has gone the way of the dodo and dealers end up eating a lot of time in exchange for not a lot of margin.

I still ride a bionx system myself (modified bakfiets) and my dad's copenhagenized clem make two technological time bombs waiting to happen 🙃

Sad to hear they didn't make it...

Yes, good insights and well written, particularly of interest (to me) of the complications and difficulties added by startups trying to launch technologically complex new products. I learned much from his observations.

Not a few of my resume clients are either entrepreneurs who have taken technology to global markets, or who are currenlty incubating high-tech products for future investment, organizational development, market entry and expansion, and -- the uber goal -- purchase by a company or a group with a lot of money. Rinse, repeat. This article fills in at least in a general way some of the obstacles they face.

Huh, I'm surprised the author of that article gave so much weight to a second-hand owner of the wheel. I liked mine (also bought used and on its third owner now) and had no problems with it, but yes it's a proprietary product that's hard to repair, and will now be hard to replace since the company has stop producing them. BUT getting less than the claimed 30 miles is not unusual, the owner in question provided no documentation for how many charge cycles were on the battery when they bought it. 15-20 miles average is fair for a used Copenhagen Wheel IMO, and you can easily knock that down to 10 if you're at full power up hills. You can also stretch it much further with judicious use of the O power setting on slight declines, the wheel freewheels well and can be pedaled unpowered. It's all part of the hyper-miling game of an ebike..stretch that range!

Rain? Pfft, don't do that, I don't care what "light rain" claims Superpedestrian made. When the owner of the used wheel started talking rain rides all bets were off for me. Maybe the latest factory-built (and expensive) ebikes can do that but I wouldn't trust ANY kit in the wet. I have two options for rain: A regular bike or my trusty Chevy Impala with a nice heater and SiriusXM Radio.

I think the wheel is an ok purchase at the right price you decide with a seller, just don't expect it to do everything your regular bike will, and don't be shocked when one day the battery has given up and so should you. It's a specific product for specific riding conditions and worked great for me as an around town shopper/cruiser. And was great fun. On dry days!

For what it's worth, mine has been ridden in rain and freezing temps for years without failure.

Wow, great comments and thanks for sharing that article - I wasn't aware that the wheel was out of production either.

Given the new information, how does $900 sound for the wheel in case someone is still interested in trying it out.

Really interesting stuff on this thread. Thanks all for sharing, and sad to see another good product with a ton of  that failed. A friend of mine ran a small dealership for Faraday bikes. I thought they had a good product: a good looking, stripped down, simple electric bike. Medium price point. Basically a Linus or Public of the electric bike world. Then they were bought by Pon Holdings, a Dutch company that owns Gazelle, Cervelo and Santa Cruz. I thought, great, they will make it a stable brand. But they discontinued the brand last year. I would love to hear the back story, but never did.
Nothing like a good old, human driven, chain having, rim brake sporting bicycle to last forever and never* be "unfixable"! My mother has her 1950's schwinn single speed bike that she has ridden every summer since she got it and I just replace tires every few years because she leaves it in the sun.

Afternoon, hope this note won't come across poorly (especially to Max who was selling his six months ago or so)...but I have come into a Copenhagen Wheel as part of a different bike purchase I made.  It's not something I'm very interested  so I'm offering it for free to anyone who wants to pick it up in Arlington, VA (just across the Potomac from DC). I do not have the charger, nor can I tell you anything about the serviceability of the wheel. It certainly looks like it was treated well, but that's all I can add.  Hope it gets used if someone knows what it needs.  Thx, Jeff in Arlington VA (I will keep the tire and tube, FYI).

Hi Jeff, I'm in the area! Are you looking to unload for free or for $1100? If free, I'm interested!

Hahaha YES. This wheel would actually be for my friend, Jonathan, who bought that orange Sam in the area. He's looking to unload all his bikes and upgrade to an e-bike. I'm hoping this means he can have the best of both worlds.
