Astronomically it's spring. Meterologically, here in SE Wisconsin, not so much. Short ride for a doctor visit this morning.

Like you, my ride today was also for an errand, but I took the long way home to see what birds might be out along the old canal (wood ducks, mute swans, and common mergansers for a few). Mid-30s today and I think we have some of what you got coming our way, but looks like it may just graze us here in MA.

Goldilocks had a rough few days.  If she can talk to me, she would have said:

- what in tarnation is all this white stuff!?  (it's called snow, sweetie)
- on Friday he had me out in -12C weather, thankfully the roads were free of this...snow
- then on Saturday, we get 10cm of snow up in this forsaken land and he has the nerve to take me out the next day
- I want to go back to where I came from, made in the warmth of Taiwan, designed in California; the others have it so good

Me: at least up here, far away from the oceans, we don't get that corrosive salty air and conditions.  To which Goldi says:

- have you looked on the ground!!!  There is salt everywhere.  Just leave me indoors for now, until the weather improves.

Me: oh, so you want to go on the indoor trainer, where roadie is?  To which Goldi says:

- All good boss, anything is better than the trainer!

The end.

Once or twice a year we pull our little travel trailer to Edisto Island State Park on the South Carolina coast. I like to take a bike for exploring the jungle trails with boardwalks across tidal inlets in the park and the miles of meandering back roads, both paved and graveled. This time I took the Platypus which, of course,  proved itself eminently capable on the varied  surfaces (though I had to pull the fenders off its long frame to pack it in the back of the pickup).
Here are a few pics from yesterday's excursion. Unfortunately the Copperhead I nearly ran over slithered off the trail before I could snap its picture.

Takashi — They call it a weeping cherry because it makes me weep when you take pictures of it with your bicycle.

From a few days ago. The first wave of cherry (maybe actually plum?) blossoms are coming to a close, but the second wave of another type, with darker pink blooms, are just getting going. Tulips are everywhere, and the early blooming rhodos are in full swing along with azaleas. My appreciate for the spring procession of blooms grows every year.

Wowza! Beautiful tulips and very lovely Hillborne!

In stark contrast to tulips in the East, here's a couple from the Sonoran desert earlier in the week. While not really the feature of the photos, the Atlantis is present.

As always, Takashi wins. Can't compete with mountains and cherry blossoms!

Still, a mid-April sunny day has me feeling like spring might just show up here soon. Pal Kurt and I went to Belgium by way of Wabedonia. 125km, not too much climbing, but the wind came in southeast off of the lake for the ride home.

I decided to walk and cross over the Nisqually River RR bride this afternoon. I wanted to give myself a feeling of adventure once again. I did this last fall, when there was no pavement on the Yelm to Roy Trail. The sun was out in between the light April showers. I took pictures with my cell phone, grasping it firmly between my fingers so that it would not fall down between the railroad ties and into the river.

I quickly noticed as I was first heading across the bridge numerous swallows were catching their food on the wing in an aerial  ballet.  When I walked back over, they were all gone. I must have scared them away.

All in all, it was good feeling to come here again. One day in the future, I will return when the trail becomes paved on the other side to Roy. For now, I will keep a watchful eye for that to happen.   - Kim Hetzel.

Kim (and everyone else): Lovely photos.

Kim: Who makes, and what is the model of, your trunk rack? I notice that the top curves down toward the saddle, a desirable feature for any I buy because my rack sits close to the saddle (bike built for 700C X 60s with fenders).

All: What "decent-size" (*) trunk rack do you recommend for a narrowish rack for bike with diminished rack-to-saddle clearance? Desired:

1. Volume. My current Carradice Super C Rackbag has a nylon throat collar that gives 13 litres/793 ci and lets me stuff in surprising heaps of stuff, but the saddle interferes with the lid. Also amputated the little rear pocket since it overhung the rear of the rack and obscured the tail light.  Would like a minimum of 9 litres/550 ci.

2. Material and construction: canvas, cotton or sturdy nylon, preferred, but open to Ortlieb-type tarp material too. Sturdy stitching. No padded/insulated construction, please.

3. Non-gaudy* color: black, brown, tan, dark gray, dark or heather green. (*) The one acceptable bright color: orange, as I have an orange shtik on this bike.

4. This may be the bottleneck: Must fit rack 3 1/2" X 12" (usable length) with ~8" clearance under saddle. Perhaps a zipped bag would work better than one with a flip-up, buckled lid.

5. If anyone has something to sell that more or less meets these criteria, I'd be interested in knowing about it.

Thanks.

I thank you for your compliment on my pictures.

Both my rear rack and bag is made by Topeak.

https://www.topeak.com/us/en/product/858-MTX-TRUNKBAG-EXP

I bought these decades ago. They have held up extremely well. I love the Topeak company for their innovative and quality products.

I have had this rack and bag both on my Clem with 27.5x2.25. tires and on a Raleigh Elkhorn Mountain Tour bike with 26 inch tires.

According to the Topeak website for the rear rack, it would fit a bike with 700C wheels.

My Appaloosa in repose on an absolutely glorious Sunday in Dublin, this spot is a mere 7km from my house but about 300meters of climbing, I was sweatin'. Doing as much riding as possible on this bike in preparation for

Then, to demonstrate the fickle nature of Irish weather, the very next morning on the other side of this hill.... still great to get out for a solid 50kms. Once you get this bike rolling there's no stopping it, I overtook a good few
groups of roadies on the climbs which is very gratifying in a smug sort of way.

Thanks Eric! I really like the setup with drops, when I got the bike originally I had Albatross bars on it which are dandy but I missed all the hand positions you get with drops.
Took some advice from Roman at Riv and went with a 5cm Tallux and 48cm Noodles. I think I have it pretty much dialled in the way I want it now (famous last words). I'm going
to have a few long days on it in a row in two weeks so that will be the real test of it.

I have too many cameras, but I’m partial to several for carrying on the bike: Yashica T4, Olympus XA4, and Lomo LCA120. Pretty much any good compact point-and-shoot makes a good cycling camera.

The shot below of my Quickbeam was taken with a Leica ia from 1930 that was recently added to my collection. A very simple camera that, despite being almost a century old, is robust and compact enough to carry on the bike or in a pocket.

Looks like an All Rounder to me.

On the camera topic … most of my pictures are from my iPhone SEv2.  My recent photos of my blue Waterford ST-22 were taken with an Olympus OM-D E-5mkII with a Panasonic/Leica 20mm/f1.7 lens. Given than I usually have a handlebar bag, I really should just carry that camera all the time. It’s quite light and compact, and the 20mm lens is a gem. I have a fleece bag that it fits in, protecting it from bumps and scratches. I’ve thought about getting an Olympus PEN E body, which would be even more compact, but it hasn’t seemed worth it.

Funny how I've gone through countless iterations on this bike, but the way it's set up today is nearly identical to how I had it set up 6 months after I got it. It's where it should be.

Keith, John, thank you for the compliments. Yes it is a custom color, I can't take credit for it! It was formerly owned by another member of this list named James, he had it repainted at Waterford (where the frame was made).  I believe it is a 2014 model.  I love how it looks in the sun.  Always loved Jimmy Carters riv!

It’s Waterford’s Copper Metallic. I had them paint my Bleriot with it. I referred to it as root beer with a creamy head. Possibly my favorite bike colorway ever. And, yes, it is mesmerizing in sunlight.

Some pictures from a ride a few weekends ago. The Montebello Road climb up to Black Mountain in the southern SF Bay Area. The ride is a really well-known one in the area and rewards you with nice views of the South Bay. Not a noteworthy climb for most to climb, but for me it was. I spent a bunch of years not riding at all, after having kids, but in the recent few years, I have been relaxing my level of paranoia and trying to get back into decent shape. Erratically and only marginally successfully. So I was pretty satisfied with myself in doing an otherwise unremarkable ~2000 feet over ~5.5 miles. The most I'd done in recent years was 1500 feet over 10 miles on an MTB ride, almost 4 years ago. The climb was a very slow grind but was a really satisfying sort of milestone because it was pretty much the first "real" road ride I'd done in over a decade. Of course, I've barely ridden in the few weeks since, but will try my best to keep the inertia up.

Would have liked to have enjoyed the views more, but I was so slow, and started off so late, that the sun was setting and I was already going to be riding city streets after dark and was going to be well late for dinner. Next time.

@Chester,

I have always wanted to ride up Montebello Road and explore, when I lived in Mountain View, California. Unfortunately, the road was gated and closed to the public back in the 1970's.

I am very glad to see that the area is a natural preserve now for the public to access and enjoy the wonderful views of the Santa Clara Valley.

I enjoyed your ride report very much. I thank-you for sharing.

Had a great ride today...Lots of streets closed to traffic due to the Ironman! Saw much multi-colored Lycra astride Cervelo (i?), S-works, Felt and more. Finishers were very tired; apparently, swim portion was against the (strong) tide in places and numerous swimmers had to be pulled out of the water. Later in the day, we got to see the Dredge at the harbor mouth, here for its regular visit. Had one brief, horrible moment, though. On a narrow path, C. ("I saw nothing!") was riding a few feet ahead of me...when a VERY FAST rattler skedaddled between us...On a less steady bike I might have lost control at that point (NOT a snake person!), but the Platypus kept me on course and fortunately was slower than the rattler (which safely negotiated its way into the brush on the other side of the trail)....Cheers!

Beautiful desert landscape. Don't envy the sun exposure but envious of rambling through that without cars around.

Great views, Chester!

Thanks! Enjoyed your last video with the shop tour.

I have always wanted to ride up Montebello Road and explore, when I lived in Mountain View, California. Unfortunately, the road was gated and closed to the public back in the 1970's.

I was a surprised when, after getting onto the gravel/dirt Monte Bello Road through the gate by Vidovich Vineyards, I saw a Monte Bello Open Space Preserve sign. I'm not all that familiar with the geography of the ridge of the mountains and it never really dawned on me that Monte Bello Preserve extends to include Black Mountain and Monte Bello Road, even though I've hiked in Monte Bello Preserve up to the "Black Mountain Backpack Camp," and have walked down a stretch of Monte Bello Road toward Page Mill.

On my ride up Monte Bello from Stevens Creek Reservoir, it was dusky by the time I got to the top. So ditched my plan to ride on northwest to Page Mill and down to Foothill Expressway, and just turned around and came back the way I came. Will try to do it as a bigger loop, next time.

Not-so-scenic snapshot of a recent ride on what's nominally my wife's Clem L. Took one of my kids for a ride to a local BMX/pump track and riding the Clem at the park felt like what it might be like to drive a Caddy DeVille on a go-kart track. The luxuriousness of the wheelbase has never felt more apparent to me. But, snark aside, it actually handled pretty sportily. And I didn't feel like a wimp for not catching air on the jumps, like I have in the past when bringing a BMX bike or an MTB there.
