I've got SunTour bar end shifters on my Atlantis and one of the plastic washers is falling apart. It's mostly gone at this point and there is a fair bit of play in that shifter. Two questions for the group.
1. can this be replaced?
2. would this brass dome washer from Riv https://www.rivbike.com/products/brass-dome-washer?variant=41087107530863 do the trick, or can those only be used on the silver product. I know that the silver shifters are nearly a copy of the Shimano pod and SunTour shifter.

Yep. It should work just fine.

I could be wrong but that brass dome looks too big for the original Silver1 (and Suntour Sprint) downtube/bar-end shifters. I know this piece will work, I recommend calling Riv before ordering the brass one (which I think only fits the Silver2 thumbshifter).

For a dollar it’s probably worth a shot. It fits on my simplex shifters…

Hey Josh, the brass washers will remedy the cracked washer in the picture you linked. The brass washers from Rivendell fit these great.

I ran the brass washers on my bikes for a while then tipped off our friends at Rivendell that these stock washers fit their shifters.

You can likely find the washers at your nearest hardware store.  Their technical name is #12 cup washers (also called counter-sunk washers or finishing washers), they're less than a quarter each (maybe much less). They do fit Silver 1 and Silver 2 shifters as well as Simplex Retro Friction as Eliot mentioned.

I noticed in a few Rivendell employee and Grant's bikes the brass washer. I know in the past Grant has mentioned replacing that plastic washer with a solid brass one, but that the cost was prohibitive. I figured the ones showing on their bikes were prototypes or fabricated solid ones. I have the original Suntour Sprint shifters on my Schwinn and got a set of the Rivendell Silver 2 shifters a short while ago. I got the replacement black washers to have on hand just in case years ago for my Sprint shifters. Looks like they compromised on the making of the Silver 2 shifters by incorporating an alloy washer cover over the plastic. Wonder if you could reduce the inner hole indentation on that domed brass washer to do the same thing.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

Thank you all for the replies. I'll give those washers a try. I may look at a few local places for them before ordering. It'll give me a reason to ride around anyway.

Sorry for the bad pic link. I tried to post pics for about 20 minutes the other day and a flickr link was the closest I could get.
