After badly gouging the paint on my orange Rambouillet with a Hupe
that I bought from a friend, I've never used it again. I'm fine with
"beausage" but this was going a little too far! Since then, I've seen
other complaints about this, and notice that one of the comments on
the blog that was posted mentioned the same thing.

I have a Bagman that I've used in the past, and that works fine for my
needs, if I am not using fenders. But most of the time I have
fenders, and since almost all the weight of the bag goes into the bag
loops and very little on the fender, the fender supports the bag just
fine.

If I did need something that is not on the seat rails and isn't a
little Nitto rack, then I might try Velo Orange's ViVa Saddlebag
support:

Same here. The Silver Hupe made a terrible gouge in my
Rambouillet...through the paint and gouged right in to the steel. I'm
still angry about it.
Bagman works much better for me and doesn't hurt my bike. I pack my
Little Joe full and no problems with the Bagman supporting it. Anything
too heavy for a Bagman should just have a rack.

I'm curious how this is happening with the Hupe - does the coating on
the upper curves get damaged under load? I don't have one, but i've
considered it.

Same here, though blue not orange.

The rubberized hooks on the hoop are too small for the tubing. The
result is that the rubber comes off, exposing the sharp edge of a
steel tube, which will promptly remove the paint, down to the bare
metal of the frame. It's too bad, and it could be fixed with a very
minor design change in the hooks on the hoop.

I have a silver hupe on one of my bikes. I have had the same experiences--the SH's plastic coating came off *and* the darn thing kept slipping down. I had to resort to four big zip ties to hold it in place, and it's been fine since I put those on. Fortunately, I put some cloth handlebar tape on the frame where the SH contacted it, so I don't think there's been any serious damage to the paint.

The Hupe is an excellent idea that suffers from sloppy execution. The piece is a length of plated round bar, which is then formed by bending (or bent, then plated. Not sure which order it happens in). When the bar is cut, the ends need to be ground with a slight radius tp prevent gouges. The manufacturer assumed that dipping the ends in plastic would instead provide enough of a cushion to insulate the bike from the burrs left by the cutting operation. In practice, vibration and movement allows the burr to slice through the coating and gouge the bike.

My Hupe is on a Nashbar Mark III which has narrower seat stays and which do not suffer the same effect as a Ram or Saluki might. It works well with the Acorn Large Saddle Bag.

Yes and what's worse is that the sharp metal bar ends eat their way
through the rubber tubing and on into your bike without anything looking
wrong with the rubber coated tips. It looks perfectly fine from the
outside. The sharp metal only eats through the rubber right on the
inner side where it sits against your tube. So you think all is fine
and just keep riding along week after week until...... >8-(

To all,

On my Bilenky, it comes with this rack that design to support a
Carradice saddle bag.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/19694929@N00/sets/72157608715925613/

It has five points, two for the seatstays, two for the canti mount,
and one threaded to add another mount point for the fender.

It is light, 100g and just right to support any Carradice type saddle
bag.

I would like to take advantage of all these bad reviews and offer up
my barely used hoop (because it stratched my frame too) for sale. Make
me an offer, and don't tell me we didn't warn ya'.

Me too. And some home made wrap-arounds, to help the Jack Browns runs
smoothly under fenders.

Ya know I just bought mine a week or so ago. I thought I'd heard they
had fixed the problem. They apparently addressed the flaw by
applying a thicker coating on to the same rod design. An easy "fix"
by the manufacturer that doesn't work.

I'd planned on using mine on my ti bike but was woefully disappointed
when I couldn't fit it inside the seatstays above the brake bridge,
(small frame) plus the tubing is oversize. I had no plans on carrying
a Caridice Camper or anything, but thought my Brooks Millbrook might
look and work OK.

Has anyone tried opening up the end loops so it settles on the tubes
correctly? I'm going to try it. A little soap for lube and force a
(tapered) fid in there. Wish me luck, I'll report back if I live
through it.

Yeah, I'm hoping to figure out a way to spread the ends a little to avoid paint damage. Anyone have a suggestion as to how to spread them without damaging the rubber coating? I've used mine on the Saluki but only briefly--not enough to have this problem it seems...

The VO seatpost clamped support is much nicer, but also twice the price at $42.

Oh, and while I'm on the subject, the little cheap VO saddle loops are far, far FAR better than the old Cyclos.

Of which sort of thing speaking: does anyone have a Rivendell/Nitto Saddlebag Grip for sale or trade? I can't quite afford the $65 list price plus shipping just now. I am using a Bagman QR, which is nice, but the defect of that is that the straps go over the retracting pins and, when you retract said pins, the straps tend to disappear into the anonymous depths of the bag, making re-installation somewhat annoying.

BTW - the Silver Hoops are now $30. I couldn't try expanding the end
loops, as my biggest fid was too small.

Nothing fancy, but they work just fine.

I had a similar problem. I mounted the hupe on my bike just for a short ride to carry some bike parts. Jerry rigged a basket onto the hupe and carried a bunch of sugino cranksets and other bike parts (including 12 other hupes). A bit over the weight limit of the hupe, but worked for the ride. Not too concerned about the paint on my bike, but a bummer that it scratches so easy. I'm still gonna use the hupe, but seems from this thread, a bit of tape on the frame is necessary...
thanks, couldn't tell if the frame was previously scratched there, or the hupe itself.
