I saw some Maxxis on someone's bike the other day and went looking at their 29x2ish offerings for a Clem or Appaloosa type bike. Has anyone used their Torch (29x2.1 53-622, 625g) or Grifter (29x2 - 50-622, 655g)?
I was kind of comparing these to the big apples or big bens by Schwalbe. These are 100g lighter than either of those, and I guess the question is, do they ride well? I am not a weight weenie, but I find that lighter tires generally feel better.
I was also wondering if a 53mm tire could fit under VO 63mm fenders on my Appaloosa.

Interested,

Edwin

I'd recommend the Schwalbe Thunder Burt over the Maxxis Torch, Grifter, Big Ben, or Big Apple.

The Thunder Burt has a slightly more aggressive tread than the others, but it rolls fast and quiet on pavement (and has great traction on hard dirt and gravel).  In 29"/700c, the TB comes in:
54-622 29 x 2.10        LiteSkin 435 g
54-622 29 x 2.10        RaceGuard 490 g
54-622 29 x 2.10        SnakeSkin, TL Easy 515 g
57-622 29 x 2.25        SnakeSkin, TL Easy 575 g

You can see that it's a very lightweight tire.
Even the Snakeskin (puncture protection)/TL Easy (tubeless-ready) 2.1" version is >100g lighter than the Maxxis choices.

Schwalbe doesn't make a 2.1" Big Apple or Big Ben in its Evolution (light/supple) casing yet.
The closest tire (Super Moto) is 60 mm wide and out of production.
Its replacement, the Big One is also 60 mm wide.

The 54 mm version should fit fine under the 63 mm VO fenders.
I have 26" x 2.1" TBs under SKS P65 fenders (on my Schwinn KOM), with tons of clearance.
