A recent thread about the red 58cm Toyo Atlantis for sale in the Bay Area (https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/bik/d/vallejo-rivendell-atlantis-58/7578102714.html) has brought back an old desire to have an early Atlantis.  It's a model I've looked at for years but never pulled the trigger.  So that brings me to my two questions.

First, I should fit according to the brochure.  I'm 5'10" and run a 75cm saddle height, which is the very bottom edge of a 58cm from that era.  The 58.5 top tube would normally give me pause (~34/35" sleeve length) but I want to run it with flat bars, as the red one is currently set up.  That should help with the top tube length.  Has anyone of my rough dimensions ridden a 58cm Toyo and can comment on their experience?

Unless someone comes out of the last question screaming, "Danger, Will Robinson" we move to my second question: is there a Rivver in the Bay Area that would be willing to check it out for me, hand over the payment, and drop it at a local shop that I could work with to pack and ship it?  I'm in Pennsylvania and they state 'no shipping' in the ad.  I'm happy to reimburse you for the trouble.

Thanks everyone!

Hey Kurt. I also am 5’10 and ride a 58cm Toyo Atlantis. I’ve had the bike for over a year now and I do agree with Riv’s fit suggestion. It is probably the biggest frame I can handle without running into issues. I set mine up with Tosco bars and a 110mm stem and it fits like a glove so flat bars and a slightly shorter stem should serve you well in this scenario. I hope that helps!

Kurt, I would base this on whether or not I was running 32 mm tires or 42+ mm tires. I had a 61 cm frame that was fine with 32 but if I wanted to really use the generous tire clearance, the top tube was higher than desirable off road. From what I understand, a 56 cm with 26” tires could possibly be better for you if you are running large tires.

You bought my Rosco Road, and know how it fit(s).  I also have had a 58 Toyo Atlantis ramble through my stable and it fit splendidly.  The reason a 58.5cm top tube give you pause is because it is coupled with a slacker seat tube than most other bikes. On a Rivendell, if you are thinking correctly about saddle position, you'll be in the middle of the rails on a Riv, where you'd be slammed back on most normal bikes.  That's 1.5cm or more right there.

Anyway, go for it and sell me back my Rosco!

Kurt:

I'm 5'10" & also run a 75cm saddle height. PBH of 84. I bought my 58 cm Toyo Atlantis in 2003 & it's been my primary bike for 20 years. Plenty of loaded touring as well as bopping around town & some trail riding. It's had various handlebars as I've gotten older & stiffer. Currently have the Map Ahearne bars with an 80 mm Dirt Drop stem.

I see "vallejo" in the ad. That suggests the bike is on the east side of the Bay. If you can find someone there to pick up the bike, they could drop it off at Rivendell for proper packing & shipping. It sounds like they're pretty busy right now so it may take a while but the peace of mind of their packing it may be worthwhile. They aren't the least costly shipper but they sure do an excellent job of packing.

Same deal for me - 5'10" - 86 pbh and I had a 58 Toyo built atlantis. Personally, I never really liked the fit. It was
hard to let go of because it was such a beautiful bike, and did ride really well. The reach was what got me in
the end. I had a similar issue with my quickbeam (58) - both of them felt just too long.
