I'm fixing up my friend's bike, and her trigger shifters are toast. She can use 2 out of 3 rings in the front, and 1 out of 7 cogs in the back. The shifters appear molded in with the brake levers, which is a drag, since the levers work fine. It's an otherwise serviceable Trek 820 with fat slicks, and it would be a great bike when it goes again. I don't think she actually needs more than one gear, but I'm not going to make that decision for her.

I'm looking for a set of usable Shimano 7 speed shifters, or cheap thumb shifters and separate levers. If anyone knows how to rebuild trigger shifters, I'm open to that, as well.

Random goodies I have to trade from the parts bin: fat 700c tires, a single new 650b Marathon Supreme, some newish XL Riv tee shirts (RONA, Freddy Hoffman). Two styles of MTB bar ends. Front derailleurs. A single Tektro road lever (fat hood style). A single speed tensioner. Small bills. Stuff like that.

Thanks in advance,
Philip

I think I have a set of shifters/levers that would meet your need. Digging around now.

the pawls inside get gummed up with dried grease and dont do their job. most likely you can open them up, degrease, flex the spring-loadd pawls back and forth until they move easily, relube and re-assemble......unless things are actually broken inside

Be careful when taking them apart because there are small bits that
get lost easily. And if a rebuild doesn't work, I've hacksawed off the
shift levers and used the cheap Sunrace as replacements:

Here is the rebuild I recently did of a horrible Big 5 cruiser; a
major part of the refurbishment was to junk the unspeakably horrible
plastic twist grip shifter/brake combos (shite, shite, shite) with
good, ol' 'merkin (or as good as American) Deore thumbies and Tektro
levers. Got great pleasure using a hammer on the shifters to break
them open to extract the cables. (The Hammer: man's most important
tool.) Replaced the expletively ugly and useless susp seatpost (under
a padded, sprung saddle) with a very short Ritchey Force, and the
gawdawful ape hangar bar with good ol' 'merkin Wald steel newsboy bar.
Still a horrible bike, but less horrible by several powers.

This project: somewhat making a horse's ass out of a sow's ear.

Hey Philip,I probably have some in my junk parts also if someone else doesn't...... message me on Facebook. I also have a few other MTB parts. No need to trade either, just cover shipping.

Thanks! I'm going to give it a shot. Kent's blog is a favorite.

The stuff he recommends, PB B'laster Penetrating Catalyst, is available at many hardware and auto parts stores, and it's great. I find it works best to take the outer covers off the shifters, so that I can see the ratchets and get the lube on the proper surfaces, but I've never had to do any disassembly beyond that.

Kent's blog is great, BTW, with a nice mix of ride reports, gear info, and general musings. He's a very good writer.

You are getting plenty of help here, but that never stopped me from piling on.  My cousin handed me down a Trek 830 that I fixed up for my son.  Same issue.  I removed the toasted shifter pods, hacksawed and flat filed the vestigial mounting stuff off the brakelevers, and installed 3x7 SRAM grip shifters that my LBS had on the shelf for $30 retail.  Worked perfecto.

Ooh, hacksaws and files! If the magic aerosol sauce doesn't work, I may do the hacksaw trick, which makes the shifter part super easy.
