Have taken custodianship of a Rivendell All Rounder outed on iBob recently.  One of the earliest ones, delivered in January 1996, perhaps the earliest based on serial number.  Original owner passed along a lot of paperwork with it, but wondering about early Riv Readers, catalogs or fliers that may have discussed the introduction and details of these models in greater detail.  Also how they may have been equipped by Rivendell if purchased as a complete bike.

Thanks,

Addison Wilhite

See if this old link of mine still works.  There are a number of early Rivendell articles/Reviews:

Rivendell Reader #3 has a bit on the first gen Rivendell frames. No info on how they're equipped when originally sold though.

One of the articles from Addison's list has the All-Rounder test bike equipped with:
  • Suntour Accushift bar-end shifters
  • Suntour Superbe Pro brake levers
  • Suntour XC Pro rear derailleur, front hub, and cantilever brakes
  • Suntour 6-speed cog
  • Simplex Touring front derailleur
  • Ritchey WCS Triple cranks with Willow chainrings
  • Specialized CrMo spindle BB
  • MKS Sylvan track pedals
  • Mavic 217 rims
  • Ritchey Mega-Bite Z-Max tires
  • Bullseye rear hub
  • DT spokes
  • Nitto stem, drop bar and seatpost
  • Campagnolo Chorus headset
  • Brooks saddle
Wow! What a hodgepodge of brands and models! All top-flight stuff for sure, but I don't think I've actually seen a bike with such varied equipment; and being a bag-matcher, I would find that…unsettling. LOL. I actually don't know if there was ever a standard fit-out for the All-Rounder. I vaguely remember that only some models came equipped with standard equipment (e.g., Quickbeam), and the All-Rounder wasn't one of them. Still, I remember Rivendell offered many high-quality, but arguably dated parts with varied availability back then. Thus, the "default" fit-out probably varied with what's at hand.

Need some pics of yours John! I presume it's built for 26" wheels. FYI - This one claims to the the first - from 1995. I don't doubt it. Not sure who bought it back in 2011 when this article was written.

Nice paint!

Thanks for the links Addison.

I bought mine in January of this year, 58cm, serial # matches December 1996. I would guess it was repainted when the couplers were added, but who knows. It has a lot of nail polish. It's has steeper head tube than I expected, but handles fine. I have long legs/short torso, so it's mainly a really big rigid mountain bike that fits me well. With the sloped top tube and extended head tube it's roughly equivalent to a 25 inch (level tube) mountain frame. Someday I'll get around to fenders and road touring on it. The Gravel Kings are remarkably sure footed.

Thanks for all the links and info.  Here's a pic of the All Rounder in my care.  I'll be re-equipping it with more current components over time.  Golden Olive is the color.  Very nice original owner who had all correspondence and order sheets, etc.   Does anyone know if a serial number record has been kept by Rivendell?  This one's serial number ends in 001

Very pretty. My first road custom was built to the Allrounder template, but with slightly steeper head and road (753) tubing and lugs and crown. It to was that lovely golden olive green. FWIW, this custom was ordered Nov 1994, IIRC and delivered Jan or early Feb 1995. I have fond memories of it.

What are those tires?

55.5cm size - center to top.  57.5 top tube.  Higher standover than I imagined, but expect it will be a nice rider, hopefully good comfortable town bike with fire road capability.

May I ask what's the rear hub spacing? 126 or 128.5? Thanks!

John, here's mine. Same size and color as yours, but customized with a 74° seat tube and couplers. I'm afraid I didn't keep very good records of when I ordered it, but I'm pretty sure it was within a few months of the AR becoming available. You're question about a serial number record piqued my curiosity. But dang, I can't find a serial number on the thing! Where should I be looking? I suppose that, being a custom, it may not have a serial number. When this frame was ready for me, I drove up to Waterford (from Chicago) to pick it up. They gave me a tour of the place.
