Looking for a non-studded 35-40mm 650B tire with tread that will work
a) in snow, and b) on a Saluki/Hilson/Foy/Sam. Any suggestions?
Sorry Bomba pals, the Quasi-Moto won't fit -- much to my
disappointment.

instead of the ol' '86 620 Trek)

ps. am going with the Supernova E3 with a handlebar mount for the new
schmidtified wheel

oops--forgot to add: urban commuting on mostly well plowed streets
without a lot of hills.

Why no studs? My co-worker uses them on her 650B Protovelo in winter
in the Twin Cities.

Otherwise, I'm no help, my 26" wheel bike happily has studded tires on
winter.

I have studs on my mountain bike if I need them, but really over the
past 5 years I've found that a little tooth on the edges of the tire
have worked well for me in most winter situations. Plus I am not such
a glutton for stud punishment. If it's a big dump of snow, I'm not out
there. Most of my commute is along Summit Ave, and with the Governor
living on there, it's well plowed and salted and has a bike lane.

Fair enough. Still of no help since I've not ridden a 650B bike in
winter here myself. Maybe one of the regular Schwalbe Marathons?
Might have enough box edge to cut through snow.

BTW, I did notice someone on an A Homer Hilsen commuting on Summit
last winter.

Before I rode studded tires, I've had good luck with 35-37mm Paselas
on my 700c bikes. So, I'd guess the B-Lines would be similarly
acceptable, especially considering your route. I'd also think the
Fatty Rumpkin would be decent due to it's inverted tread, however have
no experience with that tire.

I ride Marathon's in the shoulder seasons and they're pretty good
too. But if you're seriously averse to heavy tires, I'd try the above
recommendations first.

Col de vies are very nice for snow...they're somewhat light (studded tires = very heavy), and have the right sweet spot width wise for snow.  Ron
