Any suggestions for a paint job in the Bay Area?

They did a fantastic job on my frame (lots of smoke damage, melted paint, etc.) and only charged me $150.

Spectrum, who's often touted the best Powder coater in the US, uses a special finer powder to improve lug line definition is still not anywhere near a good wet paint job. Depends on how picky you are too.

I had my old Kogswell P powdered by a regular old powder coater. My lugs did not disappear at all. Maas does both powder and wet paint. Brent Steelman used to use Maas for all his powder so I think they must do a way better than average job. They do wet, but not sure about the quality of that work. And yes Spectrum does great powder, but not sure of the economics compared to great wet paint.

like I said, depends on if you are picky or not. The lug lines don't go away, they are just not as crisp with Powder coat.   BTW, Steelman uses Spectrum for his bikes frequently. ( according to hos website gallery).  I've had a few bikes done by Spectrum and the lug lines were not even close to the ones done by Rick at D&D as far as sharpness.

Hi Daniel -

Maas Brothers only does powder coating.

My frame is lugged. I think that given the price of a Maas Brothers powder coat, it's an exceptional value. I have several other bikes - including one with an infamous Joe Bell paint job. I think the powder coated one comes pretty close given the price.

True - you won't likely get a two-tone paint job. If that's what you want - better to go to a place like D&D.

I would be happy to post pictures if you want to see the lugs (or anything else).

Not saying Maas is a master of wet paint, but they do do wet paint as discussed on the their website:

if you're lookin for quick and cheap, leons in east oakland has done a great job for me more than once. it's $90 and you don't lose lug lines at all. You're just gonna have to do some facing and chasing when you get it back. otherwise, i love em.

Not to Hijack this thread but there seems to be a copious amount of choices on the west coast but not much on the east. A friend of mine wants to get his 70's Peugot repainted, i know the paint job will cost more than a new bike but he is attached to it and it is rough looking.  Anyone know a reputable wet paint shop on the East Coast?  Oh and I have had powder coating done on a bike before, they had some experience with bikes so it came out pretty good, only issue was i had to prep the threads before they did the work since they werent a "bike shop" per se, I just put in an old crappy bb (cleaned of course,dry with no grease) to save the bb threads. I have done pin striping over PC, it will not last more than a year in the sun, I just used enamel paint so maybe there is a better way. PC, if done right after the bike is cleaned, and the bike is free of contaminants will last a long time (any decent shop will want to blast the bike with at least walnut shells to rid it of any old paint particles). I like glossy so I honestly dont know if they can do a Matte PC.  I think cost is the main difference, upwards of $400 for a decent wet job, a nice PC job should be about $200 (here on the east coast at least).

What frame is it, how much do you value it, is it special, or is it a workhorse that you just want  to get fresh paint on?  Tghe answers could make a big difference in the resulting recommendation.

 

If it were one of my frames, and if I were in the Bay Area again, it would go to either D&D or Ed Litton.

Looks like I might be going to Sacramento for a repair.  Do you know of any painters or powder coaters there?

Peter M:  One paint shop on the East Coast is Airglow in Atlanta.  I had a bike (pre-Rivendell era for me) painted there and I was very pleased with the work, as well as the price.  The wait was a bit long, and recall that someone on this forum also had a bike painted by Airglow and was "commenting" on the longer-than-expected wait time.  As we're about to get into the colder weather here in the East, maybe your friend won't mind.  Check out Airglow's website, they can do most anything that you want and they have pix of some restorations.  Worth considering.  Cheers, Steve

I'm the Airglow customer who had to wait longer than expected. It was a 1st year Riv Road. I am very happy with the final product, although it took some persistent encouragement on my part to get the job finished within my lifetime. I recommend the work done by Hill Clarke (the painter there) as long as you have a clear understanding of the actual time frame. If I had known and agreed with the final time frame at the start, there would have been no problem. It was the successive delays that were irksome. Another local rider has since sent his frame there to be repainted and I have heard no complaints from him.  As an aside, I found Airglow because they painted a bike for Winter Vinecki ("Team Winter"), a young anti-cancer campaigner and tri athlete whose story I'd recently read.
