Crustendell Clementine Clydesdale Cargo Cycle Conversion progress

Here is progress so far on the Clementine Clydesdale conversion. Cliffhanger rims - 27.5 rear, 20 front. 2.4 Schwalbe Super Moto-x tires. Panasonic front dyno hub, Silver rear hub. 42 x 12-36 gearing, Black Shimano Altus RD. Steerstopper on the steerer extension. 3 brakes, - front Avid BB7 disc caliper, Black Tektro 855AL V brakes, front V-brake will be on a shifter for a parking brake. VO Klunker handlebars. Existing kickstand is too short. Lots of work to do on mounting fenders. I have a humungous Wald delivery basket for it.

The gloss finish of that rear fender looks fantastic and I'm eager to see what you come up with for the front wheel, so that I can do the same on my bike. I have a Clydesdale fork on an old Trek 800. I had a scrap from an inexpensive Planet Bike 26" front fender laying around and surprisingly, it works well enough. Not much to look at though, as you can see.

BTW, whats that doodad that's keeping your fork from turning?

I have a matching black 20" Honjo flat 65 front fender from Crust (you can see it sitting on the plastic on the car). It will require a lot of modification (cut in two and mount the top and rear pieces separately) if I keep the 20 x 2.4 front tire as the tire just barely clears the underside of the fender mount tube. I also have a 20 x 2.15 Big Ben that I may use instead, but I like the big tires. Now I just have to come up with a use for the 27.5 front fender that came with the back fender (Simworks). Just got the chain and blue cable housings in today (blue matches the Clementine decals). I also have some wide blue Sackville mudflaps.

Also got a new Display for the BBS02 mid drive (Chihuahuas chewed up some of the cables) and twist grip throttle. I think that I have all the parts now to complete.

I can’t remember ever seeing a bicycle parking brake.

The Crust Clydesdale fork has mounts for two brakes - a disc and a V / cantilever. I am using a V-brake as a parking brake. The third brake lever is a Dia-Compe with locking mechanism - similar to what many recumbent trikes have. Apply the brake, push the button in, release the brake, release the button and the lever maintains cable tension, locking the wheel. Just apply the brake lever again and release and the button pops out and the parking brake is off.

You can also get a brake lever that applies two brakes at once, but I thought the parking brake along with the SteerStopper to lock the forks straight ahead is what a cargo bike needs.

The twist ties are just temporary until I am satisfied with cable lengths and routing.

The blue cables are to match the blue Clementine decals.

More progress:

Found the Goldilocks tire size, 2.4 was too big (could have made it work, but would have required cutting the fenders up; 2.0 was too small, 2.15 works. I only had to slightly file the kickstand mounting hole to ensure tire clearance when the kickstand is up. Rear fender is fully mounted - I spend way too much time trying to perfect fender lines - it is better than it looks in this picture. Front fender needs to be rotated a little forward so the fender flap can mount correctly. Did some cable management. Changed rear derailleur - the Altus did not want to play well with the quick release - the Clementine hanger is short and the large diameter upper pivot on the Altus blocked the wheel from being mounted while the quick release was installed. The derailleur came on my Rivendell Mystery Bike - but that was converted to single speed. Now I have index shifting. Cut the kickstand to length and added the feet. Added links to a stainless steel Wippermann 9 speed chain - 120 total.

Curious to know how often you use the parking brake if you have employed The steerstopper and the kickstand.

I have a steerstopper on my cargo bike any similar kickstand and can't imagine a use case.

Cannot use a kickstand when it is windy even on a normal bike, doubly so when the ground is not level. When leaning a bike against something, stopping it from rolling is very useful.
