I’m so surprised to see that Blue Lug have the Platypus frames available in both colors and all sizes! They even have the Appaloosas in both colors and all sizes, including 46cm. I just got confirmation on my 55cm in mermaid. I had been collecting components all summer waiting on the Rivendell sale and was disappointed when they said they would only be offering completes. And those sold out faster than I could decide if that would be an option for me. Now I’m just hoping the frame ships as fast as all my other orders from them have.
Too excited.
Had to post.

Please do update us of any additional tarriffs/fees/taxes you paid to receive the frame from Japan!

If someone is interested in a 55cm purple Platypus frame (near Los Angeles) you are welcome to e-mail me directly.

Blue Lug seem to have gotten a huge amount of frames in the recent drops. For my fellow European Rivheads, for framesets, shipping is very likely cheaper and faster if you purchase from Blue Lug rather than from Rivendell directly.

I would love to hear about shipping experiences and potential tariffs. I am mighty tempted!

My platypus frame set came today. Here’s the timeline:
October 26 9:00 p.m. EST order placed
October 27 2:30 a.m. EST confirmation on order shipped
October 29 4:00 p.m. EST frame set arrived
There were no duties/taxes/VAT’s or whatever, BUT, Blue Lug doesn’t add sales tax, so I have to go back through my account at the end of every year to add up all my purchases for state taxes. Also, shipping was kind of high at $187. And had I waited a few days I could have gotten the frame set cheaper, as they have decreased the price slightly. Now it’s time to hose down the inside of this frame with some boeshield and chase the bottom bracket shells! image0.jpeg

I ordered a frameset from Rivendell to be shipped to Norway just a few months ago - and I don't recall precisely the cost of shipping, but Blue Lug is basically half the price. Shipping is still relatively expensive, given the size of the object - but compared to Rivs shipping costs to Europe (which makes no sense in my opinion) ordering from Blue Lug, or any other retailer is going to be much more reasonable. You'll of course need to check your country's  VAT and import policies and prices for any additional cost - there is probably a calculator online somewhere.

For international (across continents) shipping, those rates seem actually really reasonable.

All the frames I remember getting shipped from US -> Germany were more than $300 for shipping. I wonder if Blue Lug has a special agreement with Rivendell and gets the frames directly from Taiwan. (Would certainly save them money and reduce environmental pollution...)

The main disadvantage ordering from Blue Lug is that you can't use a presale, if you really want a specific frame. And you're relying on them actually offering it for international customers. I guess frames that sell really well in Japan won't end up there.

Cheers,
Jakob

PS: Congrats Mike

Jakob: Blue Lug does certainly get them directly from Taiwan, and thus often get them earlier than Rivendell HQ - they mentioned this in an Instagram post recently. I think all of Rivendells dealers get them directly from the factory.

Thanks, Jakob. I’m always surprised at how fast items can get to me here on the east coast of the U.S. from Japan. When I order from California, UPS takes 8 days. Kudos to DHL.
Also, notice all the “Blue Lug” tape on my box. They took the frame out and prepped it (chased the bottom bracket shell threads and installed a 113mm Shimano bottom bracket). I removed the BB, as I have another 118mm that I’m installing. I’m leaving the headset alone, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I found out they faced the head tube. And, after checking the frame over with a fine toothed comb, the only “flaw” I found was the R in Rivendell in the top tube was missing part of the letter before clear coat was applied. They also sent LOTS of stickers that included some of the new Halloween characters in an envelope that someone had written “Happy Halloween” on. Very cool folks over there.

Thanks you all for pointing me in the right direction! I purchased the last green 57cm Appaloosa from blue lug and look forward to decking it with the parts bin. It pays to be a hoarder; I've got it all save a 26.8 seatpost (xtr chromo is my pick, let's go ebay) and a b17. First Riv in the books (maybe 4 retired/sold Bridgestones later)!

It will come with a generic one-bolt seat post to tide you over, so perhaps you just need a saddle for now. They work best if you grease up the threads and underside of bolt head of the binder bolt, I’ve found. Less tendency to slip

I found with my Appaloosa (a 2020 model) that the provided 26.8 seatpost was a slightly loose fit in the seat tube. By my vernier calipers the seatpost was correctly sized, and I tried a couple of other 26.8 seatposts I had with the same result, so the seat tube I.D. was slightly over spec. I bought a 27.0 Nitto S65 seatpost and reamed the seat tube so that post was an exact sliding fit.
