I cannot find the GOAT gloves on the Rivbike.com site. Usually, the product page remains live there when things are out of stock. And Rivendell is often vocal about product comings and goings. Am I overlooking this product page somewhere? Did I miss some news about them? --Greg

Suggestively speaking, I bought a pair of AeroTech cycling gloves for the first time earlier this year. I like them and the padding areas on the palms.

GOAT gloves back in stock on the Riv site!

The best gloves I've ever owned. Will be buying more pairs for the future.

Apologies for being a little off-topic. I just want to know why everyone loves these gloves so much. I’m asking sincerely. I have 2 pairs so I could have them on two bikes and they gave me the wildest tan lines. And not very matching-washable. I have since bought other gloves with wild colors and more padding. But the goat gloves seem to have a cult following so I know I’m overlooking something wonderful about them. If you love them, will you tell me why?

Hey Leah!

I like the padding they provide, just the right amount, plus grip when it matters. The leather also forms so nicely to your hands.

The aesthetic is cool, although probably an acquired taste. I will say I get compliments on them all the time, even from folks that couldn't care less about cycling fashion/steel bicycles etc. And as Grant noted at some point, it is a little protection for your hands in the case of an EnDo.

Cheers,
Nick

Leah, I'm one of those GOAT loons and agree the tan lines are funky. I like the lack of padding. Every padded glove I've ever used feels like I'm trying to wrap my hand around a ball between me and the handlebar. I spend the whole ride squeezing the ball too hard.

They’re simple, cheap, look great (classically understated), and decent quality for what they are. I’ve gone through 3 pairs in the past 15 years.

I don’t like padding in my gloves. It’s unnecessary (IMO). Hard to find cycling gloves that don’t have little gel pads sewn into them. I don’t really wear them for protection either - although I suppose that could be a plus in the right situation. The leather palms give the right amount of grip, and the gloves catch my sweat instead of transferring it to my bar wrap.

I'm a huge fan of those gloves.. bought two pairs from Modern Bike this year bc Riv was out for ages.

I think the tan lines are great! I use these gloves for commuting and mowing the lawn -- just so as to keep the lines sharp :)

+ 1 for no padding and keeping the tan lines sharp!

I don’t wear gloves until I ride more than 30 miles, which is rare, or in cold weather; I agree that a properly set up cockpit — and good bar tape — make them unnecessary for hand comfort at least for shorter rides. But I do have a pair of the Rivendell gloves for longer rides which are, indeed, very nice gloves, especially for the price. Before I stopped wearing padded gloves some 20-25 years ago I found that padding actually exacerbated the sensitivity in my left palm instead of helping it.

Bar tape: Lezyne’s 2.5 or 3 mm tape is the most comfortable I’ve used, tho’ it has its liabilities: I doesn’t wear very well and it picks up dirt easily, I suppose because of the same “slightly tacky” feel that makes it so comfortable. I recently wrapped the bar of the dirt road bike in 5mm tape — thick! — and it does mute the “sting” from choppy terrain a bit, but I might eventually rewrap it in 5 mm Lezyne.

But gloves do get grungy after a hot ride or 2.

I don't know why, but the leather on  mine wore through on both hands at the heel of the glove after less than a 1000 miles of use (okay, after reading that, it seems like a decent duration, but it was less that six months of use, and I know I have other gloves that have lasted for years). They also really soak up the sweat, which made them soggy and heavy that I didn't care for. When soaked like this, it was a little bit of a struggle to remove them as well. Other than that, they were comfortable and I really liked the lack of padding.

Long time member of the goat glove cult. Rivendell has occasionally been referred to as a cult so why not matching gloves:-)))? The fist pair of the gloves I bought years ago had a considertable amount of padding – a little too much I thought but they gradually compressed. My current goat gloves are nicely beausaged and should last maybe another year.

They're also good driving gloves, I use them on my job as a public transit driver. Bonus content in photo, Sackville Shopsack I use on the bus, too!

@Joe: Love the transit shot!

@Mathias: Respect your dedication to keeping those glove-lines crisp!

I love my goat gloves. Classic, timeless look. Neutral colors. Natural materials (limited synthetic content). I've tried similar gloves with padding and prefer the unpadded ones. I appreciate the tan lines! Branded by the sun through the unique stencil of the knit.

My first pair wore out kind of fast but I think this is because I didn't wash them enough. The salt from my sweat broke down the leather, I suspect. My second pair are holding tough, I machine wash them after hot summer rides. They're a little stiff after air drying but become supple again after getting em back on. I've gone with the size medium for the last two pair, I'll size up to a large for my next pairs.

I've had to forgo those tan lines the last few years. Bummer. Now I coat that goat hole on the top with extra thick zinc oxide. Not sunscreen. Pure surfer dude zinc oxide. And thick. So far the count for basal cell carcinomas is 24 on those two spots. Ah the price you pay for being cool.
