I have a dumb tool question. No, not a question about a dumb tool. A dumb question about a tool. I need to go to Home Depot and find the cutter thingy that Mark uses in the Riv fender video to snip the stays. What's it called?

Joe,

You made me curious.

I think it is found in this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lG_WZVS9SUY

video at approximately the 7 minute and 30 second point.

But, it just looks like a fancy bolt-cutter with some kind of extra leverage to me.  Does it have a specific name other than bolt cutter?

I use a dremel for that kind of thing.

Sorry to stretch this out.

Bolt cutter! Honestly, I had no idea that's what it was called. I only know bike tools!

Thanks,

In a very unsettling way a bolt cutter is a bike tool - used by bike thieves.

If I remember, I used linesman's pliers to cut my longboard stays.

Cut stays off as long as possible to leave room in case you want bigger tires one day and want to back the fender off some more.

For waht it's wort:  I use a tubing cutter for cutting fender stays.  Easier to store, and may be cheaper.....

Happens every time. I went in for a 15 dollar tubing cutter..left with a 75 dollar Dremel tool. Now, time to start dremeling stuff...

You will probably find other uses as I am sure you realized.  It makes cutting housing when re-cabling much quicker for me than using the Park cutters; there is less clean up in order to get a nice clean opening.  There are stiff brushes you can get for a dremel that will clean things up - not necessarily bike things - pretty nice with just minor abrasion.

Do be safe in terms of eye protection.  I have had the light brown gritty cutting disc come apart while in use and it can go anywhere in any number of little pieces as it spins and flies off.

Might not use it a lot right away but my bet is that you will not be sorry you got it.

Yep, it's going to be used for the new cables, as well as fenders I'm putting on my Saluki. I'm tired of the mangled mess my Park cutters make of housing. Thanks for mentioning dremels. Like I said, I'm not very knowledgable about regular tools, and never would have thought of looking for this.

Garden variety ultra non-MUSA mini bolt cutters. Roughly $22 about 8 years ago, and thousands of fender stays later, no signs that it'll need to be replaced soon (or ever).

Dremels are fun. I can screw something up sooo much faster with one!
They're like computers that way....
