All this discussion around the GBW, plus my recent interest in older 26" wheel bikes (a lugged Trek 930 and now an Atlantis) reminded me of the mountain bike listed in the early Riv catalogs and Readers. In RR #3, Grant talks about the mountain bike, including a "D/M model" that that is designed around dirt drops with a 50mm longer headtube, and presumably a sloping top tube (maybe just an extended head tube above the TT?). My question is, were any of these made? Any pics online of these beasts?

I outed what I thought was a roughly 55cm All-Rounder on Chicago CL about a year ago and a listmember bought it. After he bought the bike, he mentioned it was a mountain bike. If you dig through the old posts, you should be able to find it.

I can take some pictures of said bike from Chicago if it helps. They were made... and they are lovely.

The link provided shows an All Rounder, which is not the same as the mountain bike. The mountain bike was going to use a fork crown that would look like a lugged unicrown, but the fork blade bends that were required proved to be to difficult.

I have a Riv MTB made by Waterford, using the All Rounder fork. The geometry is very similar to a Bridgestone MB-0/1.

So what's the difference, other than lugs? I ask because I have an old Rivendell that looks like yours, and I always thought it was an AR.

That’s a beautiful bike!

My recollection is that the original three models, Road, A/R, and D/M, were modeled after the Bridgestone RB, XO, and MB models, respectively, in terms of geometry and tubing selection. My D/M is definitely “stout”, has very little BB drop, a lot of top tube rise, lots of tire clearance (though I wish it had a bit more for fender clearance), high trail front end. And, in stark contrast to the direction Grant has gone since those early days, it has what Riv might now consider comically short chain stays.

One detail difference is that my D/M has vertical rear dropouts, while most A/Rs I think used horizontals.

Ah! That last detail may establish the identity, since mine has horizontal rear dropouts (which is a pain when fendering the bike).

Thank you!

I wouldn't mind owning that bike!

I have a Rivendell Mountain also. It was supposed to have it's own proprietary lug set. Looks like there was not enough interest in the Mountain and more in the Road and Allrounder that going with it's own lug set was not feasible, so they used the Allrounder lugs with stouter tubing, sloping top tube and vertical dropouts along with different geometry.

My Rivendell Mountain is all silver built with a mix of SunTour XC-Pro and Wilderness Trail Bike parts. It has Scott AT-3 bars with Softride suspension stem and Thudbuster suspension seatpost. Went with the suspension stem and post because I was into Softride Beam bikes. Sometimes wish I would have splurged for the cream contrasting headtube. Got it because I longed for an MB-1. Went with silver on short moment notice when I was called about it. Rivendell must have been wrapping up production there and needed the color solidified to finish things up. Will try to get some picks of it and post.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

Reginald, I'd love to see pics of your bike. 25 years ago, the cream headtube was really special, but now when I see an early Riv in one color, I think they look really understated and classy. Perfect for a Riv MTB, IMHO.

I thought I had another image or two of RBW Mountain models - this is the only one I can lay my hands on this AM

Not sure who sent me this one - Will keep an eye out for the other one that crossed my desk.

Interestingly the rarest original Riv looks most like the current ones.

How does this bike compare to the Bombadil?  Just eyeballing it, it seems similar

I really like the looks of the GBW, but this well might be my dream bike. Man. That. Is. Beautiful.

The Bombadil has more BB drop, shallower head tube angle, a bit more fork rake, somewhat longer chain stays, 584 and 622 rim diameters, and double top tube in all but the smallest size.

Other than that...

I have managed to stuff 2.25 Schwalbe Winter Marthons under fenders on mine ... just barely! Currently it has Rat Trap Pass tires and no fenders, which clear pretty easily, but fenders are again a tight squeeze.

Love your work space: Clean floor, light-colored walls, even lighting... combined with a wine cellar!!
Of course, the bike is great, too!
