I was surprised to find that the 2 otherwise generally well equipped bike shops I asked today not only didn’t have any chainslap protectors for sale, but that the youngsters in service were rather fuzzy on the idea. Back in my day (he said, bitterly, snuffling into his whiskers) they were as common as Velox bar plugs. I’m curious, do all modern bikes come with helicopter tape or some stick-on device already applied, or …, well, I can’t think of any reason why they aren’t commonly available.
Does anyone know of, even better, have for disposal (sale, trade, charity) a simple, black plastic chainslap protector? Preferably one that zip ties rather than sticks to the chainstay?
Failing that, can anyone link me to a source, or to a source for reasonable bulk quantities of good quality helicopter tape or, better yet, pre-cut helicopter tape chainslap protectors? Would the 3M brand guarantee that the helicopter tape is good quality?
Sorry, I’m so used to single ring/cog setups that I’ve not given this much thought since 2016 when I found some silver stick-on protectors, but I don’t want permanent silver on the Roadeo with the black group.
If nothing transpires, I’ll use some of that hockey stick tape that I bought far too much of a decade and more ago.
Thanks.
