I was about to get a Mark's rack... but it's out of stock again and no
ETA. I saw Riv added a R14 two strut version for front use though.
I've never used one of these.... but wondered about the stability and
or noise from the R14 wether 2 strut or back version.

For those that use them ..... do the racks rattle or jiggle or are
they solid? I used a Pletscher years ago and wasn't fond of the
noise. I don't need it to carry much weight obviously .... I just
don't want to buy a rattle trap.

I installed the Riv-available Pletscher (for front or rear) on the
rear of my bike. Not a Nitto for sure, but a fine solid medium duty
rack. The spring clip does make noise and I have been tempted to
remove it, but too often it so handy for unloading a layer of
clothing.

Also, I have an R14 on the rear of my Bleriot. Solid, like a rock.
And I don't use anything but a loaf style trunk bag on it.

I've got a Mark's rack on the back of my Quickbeam and a Top Rack (R14) on the back of my Atlantis. Both of them are rock solid and neither of them rattle at all. They're great racks! I mainly use the Top Rack for carrying a Big Loafer and the Mark's to support a large saddle bag. I suppose the extra struts might be nice if you're carrying a lot of weight but they're definitely not necessary just to prevent jiggling and rattling.

Anyone know the difference between a Nitto Mini Front and a Nitto M-12
front rack?

One attaches to canti braze-ons and the other to fork braze-ons or to
the fork using P-clamps. Both are for bikes with cantis.

I have an R14 in my basement, I just need to figure out which bike to
put it on. Probably my commuter.

Sounds like a winner then, thanks for the replies.

I have cantilever brakes. . . . so I wonder if it comes with the
needed nut and bolt to attach it to the brake bridge rear or fork
caliper mount? If it does not, anyone have a specific suggestion of
what nut and bolt type to use?

I've wondered about that rack ever since seeing it on the Rivendell
site.
In what scenario would one choose it over the M12? It seems silly to
use clamps or add separate braze ons when the canti posts are already
there.

You're asking about the Mark's rack? One reason one might choose the Mark's over the M12 is if you have more than one bike that you may want to use the rack on. Most people who choose the Mark's rack probably choose it for its versatility. I know that's why I got one.

My mistake, I thought we were talking about this one:

Mark's I can understand since it's adjustable to just about anything.

Ryan,

Some of the RBW bikes have braze-ons that match this rack.  If they are present, it is perhaps less fiddley to use the dedicated braze-ons rather than the canti bosses.  My dad's Saluki, for example, has the braze-ons for the Mini and I would pick it over the M12.

My AHH that ships today has a Mark's Rack on it (I think Keven held
the last one for me). I'm going to use it on the rear to support a
Nigel Smythe Country Bag. I was told that it's very solid and quiet.

That 2 strut thing looks really odd to me.

If you ever find yourself wanting a great porteur-style rack get a
Pass&Stow. I have one on my Kogswell and love it. It's incredibly well
made and Matt will make you one in black or chrome.

Have a couple of the mini racks. Use them on the Atlantis and
Hillborne. Find them quite useful. But both bikes have braze-ons for
the rack.

My R14 is solid. But currently not mounted on any bike. Originally
set up the Hillborne with that rack. But ended up going to a Tubus
instead. Found out for my style of S24O couldn't get everything into
a Carradice Nelson Longflap. Now with a fully wired tail light makes
it tougher to switch out the rack. As in, it's more than a ten minute
job.

Would switch back if a Sackville Large made it's way to my abode.
There is a nice symmetry to the Nitto racks front and rear.
