Hi
I am replacing brake cartridges in my Tektro 720 canti's.
I purchased them a couple of years ago and they have the longer cartridges that I think have been discontinued.  Tektro now sells these brakes with shorter shoes.
Does anyone know what the best replacement is?
 Thanks
Jason

If you want to use the holders, the Kool Stop "V Type" inserts should
work though I'm not positive. However, I highly recommend ditching
the holders for the Kool Stop "Mountain" pads in Salmon if you have
clearance for them!

Jason:

My Tektro 720s came with black pads that wore out in a couple of
years. I replaced them with Kool Stop salmons. I just bought the
pads & slid them into the Tektro holders, perfect fit. These are the
long ones that extend way back into the fork. 40 mm front tire needs
a bit of a squeeze to get between the pads.

I had gotten some generic V-brake pad inserts on a tour & had to
whittle them with a razor blade to get them into the holders. So make
sure you get the right pads for your holders.

Doug, did you have to pull the silver pin out and replace it?

Yes, replacing v-type inserts involves pulling that silver pin.  Your new inserts should come with new pins, also.  Keep the extras because they tend to disappear when you drop them in your workshop.  To Doug P's point above, I concur that there are some minor variations in the exact geometry of the metal holders.  You want a snug slide in fit.  I've had some combinations where the pads were a hair loose in the holders and that actually kind of rattled in there.  I decided not to run that combination.

I've got the short-shoe brakes, and bought long-shoe Yokozuna (salmon)
replacement pads from Rivendell by accident.
Rivendell has pads for both, $7 each. http://www.rivbike.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=yokozuna

I have the Yokozuna pads on two of my bikes and my wife's one bike.
We both like the way they deal with Minnesota weather.

FWIW, the mechanic at my LBS prefers a fairly generic one piece pad/
post brake pad. Have them on my third bike and they work just as well
as the more expensive options. More work when the pads wear down.
But might be worth the effort.

The silver pin retains the shoe into the holder. Just pull it
straight up. I re-used the original; it doesn't get any load. A
buddy lost one while we were on tour & just replaced with a piece of a
paper clip. It's not anything high tech.

One more data point: When the pads on my Tektro 720's wore out, I
bought Kool Stop Eagle 2 pads, which are really basic threaded brake
pads. I cut the ends of the pads off with a utility knife (you can
cut about a 1/4 of an each off each end before you hit the piece of
metal inside the pad). The shorter pads clear my forks so I can open
the brake arms all the way and remove my wheels without letting the
air out of the tires.

I'm curious about the shorter shoes that come with the new 720's.
Does anyone know if they clear the fork arms/seat stays?

They do clear on my Simpleone.  It is just about time to replace them, any suggestions from the bunch?

On another note, it was cold and wet here in Fort Collins yesterday, and got to wear my WollyWarm Sargent sweater all day, what a great sweater!
