The owner of the bike says: "the paint on the frame is dinged on the top and down tube. The most distinctive thing on the frame is that the insignia has a 2 in it. And since there weren't a ton of these made I'm hoping that will be the key. There a couple other unique things (the bolt on the handle bars etc.) that should make this east to identify.

Also one bottle holder, aluminum pannier rack on the back."

I thought all the Atlantises had 2s in the logo. Both of mine do. But
I'll be keeping an eye out; I would be heartbroken if someone stole
one of my Atlantises.

I ride in to work from the Richmond District, usually thru the lower Haight and down Market to SoMa. I'll also keep my eye open.

Anne,

In one of the Readers, somewhere Grant said the 2 was because there was previously a bike called an Atlantis (Bridgestone, if I remember correctly, but not one of his designs);   he liked the name enough to use it (it IS a great name), but, added the 2 because it's a '2nd generation' or 2nd version, something to that effect....

So, yes, all Atlantis frames' decals have the 2....

The Atlantis was introduced in RR 18, (referred to before that as the low-cost All Rounder) and named after the "mythical island that may have gotten sunk by what some say was an earthquake 3,500 years ago." I think Leslie is right about the 2 reference, although I can't come up with the RR issue at the moment.

There was a Bridgestone Atlantis. I recall it was a touring bike, had
brazed-on center pull brakes. IIRC some folks bought one that was on
ebay and gave it to Grant. It's all in the archives...

Wow, a serial number over 10000!!! Mine was 727 and in its heyday I recall that Riv sold about 400-500 per annum. Does that mean there are 10,000 Atlantises? I had no idea there were so many - I would have guessed there were maybe 2000-3000 total.

Wait a sec!!!

The Craigslist post says "... it has a 2 on it for the 2nd year it was produced. I'm happy to pay a reward to get this bike back, I've had it for 12 years and it means a lot to me."

Now, we know the 2 isn't because it's the 2nd year, but, 12 years ago would've been about right....   BUT that should be a really LOW build number, can't be over 10,000.....

Could it have supposed to have meant "A1-0197", and was the 197th one?   Or a misreading of the serial number, because of paint filling in part of it or something?

Even those of us outside the Bay Area should keep an eye on our local CL.  A sophisticated theft ring could move nice bikes from the Bay Area to So Cal or Portland pretty quickly.

Have others been registering their bikes with Rivendell?

You mean the serial number database tool?  I've entered mine, if for no better reason than when you're done, you get to click a button that says "Splat!"

It would be AT0197. It's an early one with the original lugs.

Not to hijack this thread but is there an online pictorial on the different Atlantis lugsets?
