So I love love LOVE Silver downtube shifters.  I actually more often use the Suntour Sprints that the Silvers copy.  I've got them on 4 bikes at the moment, 3 as downtube shifters and on one bike configured as barcon shifters.  The only gripe I have about them in the barcon configuration is that they look and feel a little too long.  I finally took some measurements and sure enough, Shimano barcon shift levers are about 65mm long, while downtube shifters are more like 76mm long.

So, when Riv started selling the S&S thumbshifters I got an idea.  I'd buy the S&S shifters, use the levers as barcons on one bike, and use the clamps as the base for Shimano indexed barcons on another bike.

I haven't done all the setup yet, but I took a few pics of the idea and the comparative lengths.  These S&S silvers are cut down to 67mm and have a rubberized lever.  I think these might be the perfect barcon shifter now.  I'm really excited to put them to use.

The clamps with the shims that come with are equally exciting for my Bombadil cockpit ideas.  I feel like George Peppard "I love it when a plan comes together"

I used a set of Silver DT shifters on a Road Std rebuild. I love how they work. Downside is how easily they corrode. There is plenty of Summer sweat falling on that region and the plating on the parts is not up to the task. I took them apart and scrubbed thoroughly, re-lubed and put back on the bike. Hope they continue to do well.

Your mod in the pics linked below looks great and would avoid any sweat issues. Definitely a keeper.

Thanks for the complement, but the cut down and rubberized mod is not mine at all.  That's the way they come when you buy these thumbshifters.  My idea is just to repurpose the levers and the clamps on different bikes.

Now that you mention it, though, I have been doing a lot of sanding and polishing of aluminum bike parts lately, so I imagine I could make my own Silver barcons out of a set of downtube shifters, and then dip them in that blue rubber tool-handle goo.  That's a great idea.

I like this idea!  I like the mechanical feel of the silvers, but also feel that they're too long.  Cutting them and dipping them wouldn't be too hard.

Genius!  ^^^

except you could probably skip 'polish' if you are going to dip+twine+shellac.  I love the thought nonetheless.

Am I the only one who likes the look (and feel) of long barcons?  They are so elegant and on my 53-55cm frames don't get in the way.  I like the look of these modified levers but prefer the long length.

I got them installed on the bike.  I don't have a meaningful ride report, but they felt good in the repair stand, and I love the way they look on the bike.
