Last chance to connect with like-minded Riv-heads.  ANYONE else gonna make it to the show?  If you do, try to make yourself known.  A pin, a t-shirt, a hat.  Maybe you're a Yehuda look-alike.  It would be fun to meet folks from the group.  I don't know about you, but I plan on taking way too many photos, and I hope to link the gang to a Flickr fest some time afterward.  Hope to see some of you there!

I'll be there Saturday.  Brown Rivendell t-shirt, blue jeans, and probably my black canvas backpack.

Just saw this on the NAHBS website:
http://2012.handmadebicycleshow.com/2012-news/2012/03/01/avoid-amtrak-from-the-bay-area-this-weekend/
We have recently learned that the Amtrak Capital Corridor route between the Bay Area and Sacramento will be subject to repairs this weekend, and there will be a bus transfer between Martinez and Emeryville. Therefore cyclists are advised to avoid taking Amtrak to NAHBS.

So, instead, I'll be taking BART to Walnut Creek on Saturday morning, stopping in to RBWHQ, then riding my bike to Martinez and catching the train to Sacramento.

I have a three day pass. I'll be there today and at least a part of
Saturday. No particular plans for Sunday. Saturday there's a ride
scheduled to leave at 8:30 from a pub out to the bike museum in Davis
and back that I'd like to do. I'll be on my green Riv Road with a
green Carradice Barley.

Geoff: since you're from out-of-town, I made this for you or anyone
else looking to get from RBW to the Martinez train depot. There are
two options: a meander up over and down a couple of hills, and the
more straight-shot (partially involving a MUP canal-side path).

The ride tomorrow morning apparently leaves from de Vere's pub at 15th
and L st (1521 L), mrrting up at 8:30. I'll try to be there a bit
ahead of that.

During the show you'll probably see me in a black and white wool
jersey from Shamrock Cycles (bought that today), and a houndstooth
Walz cap.

Lots of beautiful bikes to see, including a Homer at Selle Anatomica's
booth.

I only ran across one Riv rider all day, when I went to pick up my bike...  (well, two... one vendor told me that she had one...)   He was riding an Atlantis, kind of a lime green color.  Told me a story about how there'd been a mixup in the custom colors and the painter had painted the wrong bike.

Wearing my Rivendell T-shirt did get a lot of attention though... unfortunately most of the attention was from people asking if I worked for Rivendell.  Happy thought, but it made me wonder if I was a good representative for those who didn't ask and just assumed. :-)

Lots of beautiful bikes there, and I did ride the AHH at the Selle Anatomica booth to try the saddle!  I have to say, the AHH feels much more at home on the road than on a trainer!

Rich Lesnik was there.  And after we left my son and I ran into Jay Ritchey and his dad Tom having lunch.  Without question the highlight for me was the people that I got to talk with.  I did take about 50 pictures of bikes, though:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/sets/

Joseph Ahearne was a real nice guy.  His designs are really exploring new space.  He had a snow bike, and a Monster Tour, and an urban mixte with a kiddie seat on the back.

I interrupted Tom Ritchey's lunch and yet he kept asking me questions about my reactions to the show.  The free beer and 40 Anniversary Ritchey pint glass was a touch I didn't mind telling him I appreciated.  It was really great to see Jay, since I didn't get to say goodbye to him when he moved to Arizona

Mitch Pryor was also a real good guy.  I admire his earnest motivation to keep MAP a one-man-show.  He's young but he's got a wise vibe to himself.  Of the young turks I have to say he might be my favorite

Steve Rex made the effort to come out, despite the massive 8 blocks of travel from his showroom to the convention center.  I'd say it is extraordinarily likely I'll be buying a frameset from Steve in the near future.  He's a pro, knows his niche, and does delicious and clean work.

Jay Sycip heads up Cielo (Chris King).  I really like his passion for the real end to end craft of bike making.  His fire for his ideas is really infectious and inspiring.

I had a nice long talk with the son of the founder of White Industries.  I've talked a lot about the ultimate compact double crankset.  I'm saving up for a 48/32 VBC crankset, after discussing a couple details with him that I'd never noticed before.

Turns out Stevil Knevil of All Hail The Black Market is a very old friend of mine.  It was kind of a high-school-reunion kind of moment.  I had no idea that he was him.

We only got about 3 hours but it was a thrilling afternoon.  It was a good day to spend with my son.

I only saw Rich and bought a T-shirt for my son from John Grant. His drawings are great!

I guess my RBW cap wasn't noticed... ;-)

I had never seen so many beautiful lugged steel bikes together! Even my wife was taken in by the whole show. Art, she called it. She had resigned herself to a boring several hours tagging along to ensure I didn't buy anything, but was awed by the experience. And did buy me a couple of wool cycling caps!

I loved Steve Rex's winner bike and how he put it together. Not flashy at all like some of the other ones, but such attention to details. The rear rack blew me away. When I'm ready for a custom, I may order it from him. Someday...

Keven and Jay recommended him to me to replace the down tube braze-on that I has messed up and he did that a while back while I waited. Great guy and great bikes.

The 200 limit doesn't mean you can only have 200 photos, it just means
the 200 most recent will be visible. It's a rolling #. So no need to
delete.

Also, I haven't done this but figure it would work: Start a group,
make it private, and add ALL your photos to it. The new photos after
200 will displace the the old ones in your photostream, but they can
still be seen in your group.

The idiomatic definition of the phrase "young turk" is:

________________________________________________________________________
A young person who is rebellious and difficult to control in a
company, team or organisation.
http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/idioms/young+turk.html

I have one of Mitch's Randonneur Project bikes. This bike reflects a
conservative appreciation of tradition and classic forms as well as a
very high level of craftsmanship. It's about as classic as it's
possible to get, and not what I associate with "rebelliousness".

Do you /really/ mean Mitch is rebellious and difficult to control? Or
did you just use it loosely to indicate a young builder?

Unfortunately I often feel that way about my AHH and take another bike if I'm going to leave it anywhere...

One of the most interesting things at the show (to me though) was that one booth had bikes with road grime and dirty tires... (Naked cycle, http://2012.handmadebicycleshow.com/2012-news/2012/03/03/naked-cycles/)  I commented to the guys that I thought it was great that they had ridden bikes rather than pristine show models (which I also appreciated), and they said that they rode the bikes from Eureka CA with a 70 lb load!! :-)

JPP, that is really a function of where you live and work, and your local bike theft stats. In the past 9 years I've left some nice bikes (e.g., Richard Sachs, Curt Goodrich, Rivendell Rambo, carbon fiber racing bike) locked up all day outside my place of work as well as outside restaurants, bars, markets, stores, etc., in Madison, WI, literally thousands of times and have not had so much as a blinky light stolen. I'm moving to San Francisco in a few months and will surely have to change my habits.

I appreciate that these are show bikes, and it's exactly the point that they are exquisite and perhaps even, in some cases, a bit too ambitions,  impractical, or daring. It's great that in a venue like this the builders can just "go for it" and make bikes that showcase their skills and imagination, and leave the pragmatic issues aside just for once.

Yes, but it's even better when -- as is the case with the Oregon
Manifest -- those bikes are actually used in challenging conditions.
Sometimes the "limits" on the imagination are those dreary elements of
practicality.

I think the Oregon Manifest is fantastic, and I think Interbike is fantastic, too. But I don't see why NAHBS should want to (or have to) be either one. It's its own thing.
There's plenty of room in the bike universe for a full spectrum of exploration..

I had a busy weekend, so only made it for a couple of hours on Saturday morning.  It was the same overwhelming barrage of eye candy that I remember from San Jose 5(!) years ago, except with many more people this time.  Highlights for me:

-Finally getting to meet Rick Hunter, who's work and quiet style I've appreciated for a long time.  Nice guy. His off-road touring bike with the split-handlebar stem was the top of my "niftiest" list for the show.
-Talked some with Eric from Winter Cycles, who I've been aware of but never really spent that much time looking at his work.  He had a great stripped-down but functional fixed gear with fenders, generator lights, and a Wald steel handlebar brazed into the stem.
-Got an "atmo" sticker for my tool box, straight out of the hands of the man himself.  He always brings the same bikes to NAHBS--a couple of his signature road bikes and a cross bikes, all done up with his trademark red and white Joe Bell paint job.  But man, I could spend hours staring at the details on them; not just in the frame, but the assembly as well.
-Talked with the folks from Selle Anatomica about the new Titanico X, their saddle for those of us north of 200 lbs that they were debuting at the show.  I'll be getting one for the upcoming QB build.  They had an AHH set up on a trainer as a demonstrator.
-Through a friend, I got to meet Chris Chance and Charlie Kelly!  Cool, laid back guys.

Some of the bikes are always "concept cars," that show off new ideas,
like the Cherubim space ship. These builders are showing off for each
other, too. They're putting their best ideas and most interesting
prototypes front and center.

I don't think they're too nice. Bikes are made to be ridden. In
Portland I regularly saw an Ahearne mixte locked up on the street that
had been displayed at NAHBS. It may have won an award there. At bike
events, which don't count as heavily, I've seen MAP bikes locked up
outside that I'd seen as show bikes in previous years.

outside that I'd seen as show bikes in previous years.

Actually, "Titanico" is the general model name for the SAA saddles, including the "Legacy" model which is for lightweight riders, so I don't think they're trying to associate it with big riders.  The "X" designates the saddle for us big guys.

I ride with Deb Banks at San Francisco Randonneurs.  At NAHBS, Deb told me that she's travelling through the 14th of March, after which she'll be all set up to take orders.  That's when I'm going to order mine.

"Turns out Stevil Knevil of All Hail The Black Market is a very old friend of mine.  It was kind of a high-school-reunion kind of moment.  I had no idea that he was him."

...and he posted the photo he snapped of me in the blog. I'm as famous as Chris King, inasmuch we are both pictured precisely once in today's AHTBM:
