Has anyone tried cloth bar tape and shellac combination to get close to the cream details on Rivendell. I am thinking of these two options

1. White + Clear shellac : I am assuming that clear shellac will slightly tint the white
2. Viva toshi off-white tape + clear shellac.

Has anyone tried any of these combinations? What was the result ? If you have pics would be great  !

Thanks,
Deepak

Hi Deepak -- Blue Lug sells an off-white acrylic tape that is within rhyming distance of the cream of Riv head tubes. But I would caution that with use and age the tape will become dirty and will no longer match as well. This will be true whether you go with white, white w clear shellac (which will just but a touch darker), or the off-white acrylic tape.

Thanks Eric for your inputs . I might just go with white bar tape and amber shellac ( classic French constructeurs style ) to add little warmth to homer blue. If anyone else any other ideas or combination that works well with Homer let me know .

Cheers ,
Deepak

This was my old tape job on my Bleriot, the tape was an off white, the shellac was from flakes.

Deepak,

Try yellow bar tape + amber shellac. Here is an in-progress image of just that with five coats of amber. I used the same combination on a previously owned Homer. Looks very nice paired with Homer blue.

Best,
Rich in ATL

I like Rich's idea! Yellow or white tape with amber shellac looks great.

Thanks everyone one for the suggestions. I have yellow + amber on my Atlantis which I do like a lot. This time around I am leaning towards white + amber (just slightly different). Will post the picture of the final build!. Homers should be in anytime now. The wait is agonizing yet wonderful! :)

You could also dilute amber shellac with clear shellac and try that over white bar tape. There are also some lighter amber colors of shellac available from https://www.shellac.net/button_shellac.html if you like to mix your own. The button shellac is also more durable and has a slightly tackier/grippier feeling when wet, at least to my hands. The "Super Golden Kusmi Button Shellac" would be nice over white. Diluting the pre-made canned shellac and applying more layers is better than one thicker layer which will start flaking off after awhile.
