Randi Jo fabrications caps rule. The linen caps are thin and cool, and their XL cap is actually big!

Mostly I wear caps from the Walz Velo/City collection. They are wool (for the most part anyway) which you'd think would be hot hear in Hawaii (and on RAGBRAI and mainland rides). I like the bigger visor over normal cycling caps and, being wool, they don't start stinking right away on tours.

I wear a Halo brand skull cap (white) with it's built-in sweatband with a Patagonia Duckbill visor.  The Duckbill Hats are too shallow and are mesh on top, so the Halo cap with the Duckbill visor version makes for a 2-piece hat.  The Duckbill hats and visors have much wider visor than any cycling cap ever has, and the visor isn't angled down like cycling caps which end up blocking your vision unless flipped up, defeating the purpose of the visor. I have just the right amount of coverage from the sun from the sides.

All I can say is this works like a charm for me in heat and humidity. This morning the dewpoint was 75 and temp in the mid 80's.

I'll second the Halo cycling products with their sweat seal functionality. I generally bike with a cotton cycling cap, but I'll put on my Halo sweatband when I know it'll be hot, and I'll be hoofing it. The sweatband redirects sweat away from my face and (more importantly) my eyes much better than a cotton cycling cap. The sweatband is also low profile and fit comfortably underneath a helmet (if you so choose to wear one). They're a bit pricey, especially when compared to cotton cycling caps on closeout, but they're worth the money.

I used to wear a Tilley, but the air flow noise and loosing them because I took them off for fast descents (flapping and noise) and they found they way free (at one-two a year, that gets pricy) I switched to a cycling cap. Wool from www.Walz.com. Four ply boiled wool hat over it in winter. Grin.

This year I’ve been wearing a Shelta hat https://www.sheltahats.com/products/the-firebird
The front brim is stiff like a ball cap while the surrounding wide brim is soft like a Tilley. So far, it stays on my head at 20+ mph descents and keeps sun off my ears and neck. They have different styles with varying widths in the side.

+1 to the Randi Jo caps. I have a Paul-branded one, and it's really lightweight and has a nice wide brim for my satellite-dish face.

I like the Nitto cap Riv sold (sells?). Maybe not the best for super sunny days--I do have others.

I've been wearing only Rothera Cycling caps lately. They use a plastic piece to stiffen the brim, which tends to last longer and not get stinky compared to cardboard that other brands use. They are probably 8% smaller than I'd like (one size).  I use to be a Walz guy but discovered the brim was absorbing too much stink, rendering the hat useless.

I also now use a Randi Jo Fab cap... I had ordered one of Rivelo's last batch (the blue with waxed cotton.)  Works great with or without a helmet (I do both depending on my ride/day.)  I'm a heavy sweater regardless so even after a short summer ride yesterday morning with no helmet it was as saturated as it could be with brim dripping by the time I got home so can't say it's any hotter or cooler than anything else I've used but it's very comfortable with a short and flexible visor.  Not sure what size it is, probably a M/L, but has elastic in the back that offers a good range of flex.

I second Ryan’s hat. Ordered one with flaps, and quickly scooped a second without flaps as it has become my favorite hat by a mile!

Hey Tom! I’m curious about your Walz cap brim. My wool caps brims are all fabric, so wash right out and still hold their shape, but this is my first year with them, so they may have changed.

Patrick,
My experience is with their summer-weight wool cap a few years ago. It had a stiffened brim, which I discovered was cardboard. Same with the synthetic caps of a similar year.
The thicker winter-weight caps appear to be different.  I haven't found a winter weight cycling cap that covers my ears sufficiently, so I typically wear a wool beanie.

Another vote for Randi Jo Fab. I have the linen and waxed canvas caps. They are comfortable and can be worn off the bike and you don't look like a roadie who has lost his bike and forgot to wear his lycra shorts. They also come in larger sizes for the guys that have a large head like me.

I got a big bald ole mellon head & unfortunately cycling caps look silly on me.
But, beyond esthetics I find them inadequate for keeping the Texas sun at bay.
In the winter I wear an assortment of beanies, varying them depending on intensity of cold. Spring and Fall ball caps of some sort & in the summer full or partial mesh trucker hats mostly keep the sun off while allowing some ventilation.
When you sport a chrome dome you become very familiar with hats of all sorts.
Possibly not the answer you were looking for?

Thank you, Tom. I checked. My winter and medium weight wool Walz Caps are obviously a fabric bill, but my lightweight worsted wool cap does seem to be cardboard. Calling them to find out.

OK, Patrick,
Here's what their website says: Made from a washable fabric stabilizer won't disintegrate like cardboard (bleh) or crack like plastic (yuck).
Either way I had issues with the brim absorbing stink during the summer. No amount of washing or white vinegar could remove it, unfortunately. Seems to work against the idea of having a wool cap to help mitigate stink.
The Rothera brims don't seem to absorb odors, but are prone to creasing. It's always a trade-off, it seems.

Tom

I'm a hat junkie and have collected ball caps since I was a youth.  I probably have had over 100 at a time at various points of my life.  Not sure why, just always dug hats.

As I have passed the gene on to my kids, they are always with a hat as well.  And "bike hats" as they call them fit them well.  I like the Pace (have the Riv one as well) caps a lot but also dig the Randi Jo  Wooly Riv cap.  I wear it out all the time as a hat, in addition to under my bucket.  It looks like an old Brooklyn Dodgers cap.   When winter swap season comes I buy every cheap cap I can to sweat in and for my kids to wear and lose.  I have a big head and some of the Italian caps are tight.

As for sun hats, I highly recommend a Tilley.  They aren't cheap, but they are legit (Canadian made).  When I am in the sun, I wear it all day.

Oh, I love cycling caps.

Summer: I wear caps mainly for sweat control (even the 1/2 mile rt to the store just now -- panniers easier for loads than carrying while walking -- with bare head had sweat flowing down my face and making my sunglasses slip), and perhaps they do a bit for shade (though I wear sunglasses) and even for wind protection. In the rare occasions I ride in the rain, the brim keeps the driving drops from stinging my face and even keeps my shades freer of raindrops.

I presently own about 6 or 7 Nashbar-distributed retro team caps (which cause me all kinds of anxiety when it comes to matching them with jerseys: is it caddish to wear my nice Bianchi cap with my Bianchi jersey? What about a Legnano cap with a Sugoi jersey?); 2 or 3 remaining custom caps from an order from LittlePackage some 5-6 years ago; and a green Rivendell cap. With all but the customs, I shorten the brims by ~8 mm by severely bending them upward, this so I can see out from under the bills when in the hooks. Low brow, doncha know.

Winter: I have 3 wool cycling caps with reasonable brims that to some degree or other do stay put over my ears: a big floppy Walz** from Synaptic Cycles; a nice Trek or Specialized cap; and a cheapo wool that I bought on eBay that is pretty good for the money, though a bit too snug -- I have a large head. For really cold weather I wear a pseudo Peruvian cap in cheap wool***, with earflaps that tie under my jaw, or a balaclava, though I haven't used one of these last for several years -- too much of a hassle to get it on, when the Peru cap keeps me almost as warm.

* I think that the brims on these may be as long as 4 cm. An earlier set had ~3 cm brims, and used to cause my daughter all sorts of social grief when I rode over to meet her at school.

Riding temps from 100+ highs, tho' with humidity high if it gets past 10%, to the upper middle teens.

** This has caused snide comments from the teenage girl set when I ditto.

*** $12 or less from Target 6-8 years ago, but very practical.

Thanks for the info.
Ranji Jo Linen, natural, large it is.

The wide brim and more normal look of the cap appeals to me.
Hopefully it will work out great.

Right now I only have an Ibex wool cap. It is fantastic in cold weather and heat so far.
But I think I will like the Ranjo Jo as it appears to look more like a normal hat.

I might get the Gingerbread rain hat next for winter to keep the head dry.
