Hi everyone. I'm thinking about changing my handlebars and I'd love any advice you have time to send my way.

The recent discussion about neck pain got me thinking: I don't experience a high level of neck pain, but I like switching things out on my old Riv (27 years old this year) every once in a while, and changing from my current moustache bars to something more upright could be a fun change (maybe the Bosco or Boscomoose?)

I included a photo of my bike below. Thanks in advance for any advice you have time to send my way!

I’m a big fan of the Jones Loop H-Bar. It’s the handlebar I keep going back to when others disappoint. I have them on 3 of my bikes now. You’d need to swap to a Faceplater-style stem, but that’s easy enough to source these days.

I’m really enjoying the Billie bars on my Sam, and I find I’m using the “forward bend” part of the bars a lot more than I thought I would for those times when you want to stretch out, or get aero, or just want a different position. The extra length gives plenty of of room for grips, levers, shifter mounts and other various bits.

Thats a beautiful custom All Rounder.

I have different physical limitations that result in the same answer, Boscos! To get a riding position that results in having enough reach to the grips you'll probably need the longest stem you can find such as the Nitto 90-190 135mm Riv sells. The Bullmoose version is also an option, my very vague recollection is the reach is about 120cm, but I wasn't a fan of non-adjustability of grip angle.

You'll need short-pull flatbar levers, I have some nice not-too-pricey Shimano Tiagras on a bike. You may want to consider shifters on the bar or stem, those downtubers will be a long reach down now. But that's personal preference and neck/back flexibility limits, if you don't shift-shift-shift all the time (I do) it may be fine as is.

I heartily recommend Boscos, it's Riv/Nittos best bar in my opinion.

Since your moustache bar is lower than your saddle, perhaps the Maes Parallel with tops level with saddle. Preferably in a 38 cm width. Just kidding about the last (tho’ I like that width for road) but not kidding about the MPs.

The brilliance of the MPs is that, when you set them up with ends more or less level with the ground, you still have long ramps that join seamlessly with the brake hoods.

RH now calls the same bar the “Professional” and it comes in widths as wide as 46 cm.

I tried about a dozen times to like the original M bar but it was never really comfortable (the best position was as you’ve set up yours, rather low and forward, not high and close). The MPs are on all my bikes except the Roado which I may well switch in the future.

I forgot to add that I do use the MPs (42 cm) on my off road bike.
