I don't know the story behind it, but one of those saddles has been on my Riv custom for more than 20 years. As for the grey being exclusive to Rivendell, I also have a grey Brooks Pro, which definitely didn't come from them - I bought it down the road from a local bike shop.

In any case, what you will find, if you use the saddle, is that the grey is an additional layer of dye over the normal black, and after some use, the the grey wears off on the higher wear areas, showing the black underneath. Here is what my grey B17 looks like these days:

And here's what mine looks like. Send me a PM if you'd like to buy it. The B17 shape just doesn't work for me as well as some others.

IMG_5483.jpegIMG_5491.jpegMy first post got deleted somehow, but here is the pic of my gray titanium b17 along with a Google search result talking about a “limited” run of these for Riv.

Maybe this is another example of “don’t trust everything you read on the internet”. But, I appreciate the other posts showing how these saddles break in!

Nick, I guess there is no doubt where the areas of most contact are for you!
Interesting, as it is opposite of what I usually see with my brown saddles; darker with age in the areas with greater contact, because of sweat I suppose.
I like the "patinated" look that is even nicer than out-of-the-box.

Howdy folks.

I too have one of these, it’s been on my Joe Starck Riv most of the time since I built it in ‘99.  I can’t swear to it, but I think Rivendell was the first to offer a B.17 with Ti rails and they only came in gray.

To the OP, I would totally use it if I were you…

I was able to purchase an interesting Brooks B17 with Gray leather, copper rivets, and titanium rails. I thought I’d install it on my All-Rounder, but a Google search result partially explains that this saddle is somewhat rare and a Rivendell exclusive (the FB link no longer works. ) Maybe the Google result says it all, but does anyone know the story behind this Brooks?
