Maybe you all heard about Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster's bicycle being stolen at practice. He is the youngest player in the NFL at 20 years old, and he does not have a driver's license or a car. He goes everywhere by bike, and he is quite attached to his Ghost bicycle from REI. He rides around with his Steelers helmet acting as his bike helmet, made even more wonderful by the chinstrap and GoPro attached to the top. I know this isn't Rivendell, but I'll chance posting the two videos of the story anyway because they are so uplifting and energizing. Plus, it's a win for biking as life.

Short version: there was collective outrage and Steeler Nation mobilized to search the city for JuJu's stolen bike. I hope the first video works because it is only a Facebook link and I cannot find it elsewhere online. Enjoy!

If you are interested in more of the story, you can google and see the cool cleats he got to send a message after his bike was recovered, and you can see him as the Pittsburgh Penguins' guest as they play a song addressing his bike recovery.

Leah:

Yep, the links both work.  A happy ending story.  Interesting, 20 year old professional athlete with no license or car.  Sounds like a radical :-)

Not only was there the whirlwind of press about his bike, there was the overlooked fact that JuJu doesn't even have a driver's license, he is very proudly a bike-only guy in an age group that wouldn't usually be so overt about such. He's also pretty overt about enjoying where he is.

His quarterback had some nice words about him after his 97 yard pass/run touchdown last night in Detroit and he is growing in esteem in the public for what he does, including how much he loves his bike and riding. The videos really show why this place embraces the athletes on the pro teams since the environs are so compact that you see them all the time, like regular people. Al Villanueva, the Army grad, Ranger, Bronze Star of valor recipient, left tackle is teaching him to drive in his big truck so he can get his license.

Andy, I was waiting for you to chime in! Yes, JuJu is overtly appreciative of where he is - and seemingly everything else around him. I looked at his Twitter and everything is “lit.” His bike is “lit.” His style is “lit.” Love it.

Also love Al Villanueva, hero that he is. And of course he has a big truck, as he well should.

You guys have a pretty good thing going out there in the Steel City. Cheers to you and your city, Andy!

I didn't know the backstory behind his TD celebration.
