I hauled my Quickbeam out to Davis, CA, today for a ride to the nearby town of Winters—a very popular 30-ish mile round trip. Photos show (might be out of order depending on how they display in the email):

One of the dome-shaped student housing units on the UC Davis campus. Built decades ago and still lived in. They tried to tear them down a few years ago, but that plan apparently didn’t come to fruition.

Mask-wearing cyclist on the Stevenson Bridge over Putah Creek. Locals will tell you that the graffiti is helping to hold the bridge together. Interestingly, the exact same bridge crosses another creek about 50 miles from here.

The red/bike bridge into Winters. Built in 1906 as a rail bridge and restored by the City.

Steady Eddy’s coffee house. Always popular, even in these days of COVID.

My Quickbeam at the start of the ride. It’s currently set up as a three-speed, and will probably stay that way for the foreseeable future. I rode this bike as a fixed gear for several years, including Paris-Brest-Paris in 2007.

Hope you enjoy the pics! For those who are interested, camera was a Minolta HiMatic AF-2, loaded with Ilford HP4 film that I developed at home.

Great photos Eric.  I had my Qb set up the same way: Honjos and 3 speed.  Sold it in a weak moment.

Wish I hadn’t.  Sure miss it.

As I live in Davis, I should have brought my Quickbeam out and rode about a 1/4 mile behind you HA!

It is a nice ride out to Winters but can get boring sometimes so I've experimented with some creative routes through farm field access roads. So far no problems but luck can only take you so far.

Your bike looks great too.

Actually, we moved to Carmichael a few years ago, so I don’t get to ride to Winters very often. I wore a rut into the road when I lived there, but being away makes it interesting again.

Here’s more on the dome houses at UC Davis:

Interesting story about student—and faculty!—fighting the administration over a beloved feature of the campus that didn’t quite fit the C-suite’s vision. Needless to say, the students won this one.

Good story Eric. Thanks for that. And the grounds known as Baggins End. . . plus you riding your fantastic Quickbeam. Talk about Riv content.

Best,
Rich in ATL

3 speed hubgears on top quality frames. One of the great marriages in the history of cycling.

We call walking a “24-inch gear” (two feet). No shame in that!
