FS 64 cm Atlantis - custom blue

Hey everyone - I moved to the Boulder area a couple of years ago and there are so many great trails here compared to where I lived in the Bay Area for so long.  I've taken my Atlantis out on them, but my wife has tired of my suggesting new ways to retrofit it to make better use of the trails and so talked me into a Surly Ogre works a little better on the trails around here.  It's not an Atlantis, but I think it's the right tool for this job.

Alas, though, I need to do the fiscally responsible move and sell off my Atlantis.  I got it in 2006 when they were still Toyo made and had it painted a dark blue that I liked.  I had to save money for it for a couple of years and took great pains to get the best parts I could afford/justify for it.  Really, the only corner I can think that I cut was that I didn't get Phil Wood hubs but I stand behind all of my other choices in putting it together.

Anyway, it's a sad day, but a necessary one.  If you know anyone looking for a 64 please pass along the information.  If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.  Thanks for your time.

Thank you so much. As you can imagine, I agonized over the color decision and made several trips to the HQ to try to get some help with it.   I almost went orange like my dad's old VW van from when I was a kid but I think the blue turned out well.

Yowzer that's a nice one.
Don't know your situation Drew, but I'd say hold on that that very unique bike that was obviously built up with a lot of though and consideration (and $$$). Fatbikes are pretty awesome, I'd like a Mukluk like nobody's business, but your Atlantis is something special.

I would like to, but I have been home with our twin 3 year olds instead of earning actual money since we moved to Colorado so I have to sell to pay for the mountain bike.   Really, I hardly have time to ride much anyway and the little I do I have been enjoying more on the gravel trails which is just more enjoyable on a different bike.

Hi Drew!

That is a sweet looking Atlantis! I'm going to second Tony's recommendation to try a set of fat knobby-type tires before parting with that bike. I've extensively used my Atlantis with Schwalbe Marathon XRs (700x40) on the trails and primitive roads on the Navajo Rez in the four corners area of Arizona and the riding is very similar to the trails in the Front Range area. The Atlantis is a great off-road bike with the right tires. Oh, and with the 700x40 XRs, there still miles of space, so easy enough to go much fatter.

I'm leaving wednesday to ride the Natchez Trace Trail, and would appreciate it if someone would talk Drew out of selling this great looking bike before I get back.  I'm very tempted to buy this, but agree with all who've replied, that maybe trying some different tires would make it an all-rounder for him.

Drew, I 9th the recommendation to focus on retooling your Atlantis, particularly since it sounds like your Surly is shock free. An 80's style mountain bike is a blast. My Hunqapillar with Albatross bars and non-knobby fat tires (Schwalbe Dureem 50's) does fantastic on most trail, with more capacity to ride them than I have. WIth knobby tires, that would be even more so. The choice to sell may well be one you regret at some point in the future, especially since the handlebars and tires are so easily swapped. Perhaps swap them, try it, and if it works, sell the Surly?

Believe me that I never envisioned selling it when I bought it.  It did occur to me that I could retrofit the Atlantis to do more "tough stuff" riding.  I started putting a list of all of the parts to really do it right and it was going to be a few hundred dollars - and I started pitching it to my wife and she couldn't get past the idea that I just had the wrong tool for the job.  If I wanted to be riding on trails then I should stop trying to make the Atlantis fit if another bike might do better.  Plus, a few hundred dollars that we really don't have versus a revenue-neutral switch to a mountain bike (hopefully).  

Anyway, it's an emotional decision having to part with this bike, but if you take the emotion out of it I think (hope) that it's the wise move.  I guess we'll see.

That makes sense, Drew. The consideration that with the Atlantis you can then easily switch back to an all-rounder at little to no cost down the road is worth including in the calculation. Yes, it costs a few hundred now (less if you can buy used components via a WTB post here), but the long term costs of the switch may be harder to see, especially for your wife. WIll you want to do a tour in the years to come? Some road/dirt rides? Living in Boulder, there are some amazing rides to Estes Park that offer great camping etc that an all-round Atlantis is built for. Whatever you decide, have a blast!

I owned an Atlantis for several years, and I own an Ogre now. I will be a bit of a contrarian by agreeing with your decision to swap the Atlantis for the Ogre. Aside from traditional geometry and lugs and the Rivendell mystique, the Ogre has all the good stuff the Atlantis has, and then some. Loads of tire clearance, more brake options, Rohloff option, numerous rack options, trailer hitch option, easily single-speeded, tough, not as much regret (or as hard to replace) if it gets damaged, etc.

Jim, I remember reading about your Atlantis years ago on your blog (if I'm remembering correctly) and it was an inspiration to me to buy it in the first place - so thanks for that.

 It's been a great bike - it's kind of the generalist of the bike world, no?  Can do almost anything at least competently.  It always seemed, though, like where it would really excel would be in distance cycling - Brevets and whatnot - packing stuff to go with you..and that was just never me.  I just had more fun when I could take it off road a bit. The part of cycling I always enjoy the most is when I'm off road somewhere and I feel like I'm part of nature.  It makes me feel like a kid again.  And the Atlantis can do some of that, it's just not it's forte in my opinion.   Anyway, I think the Ogre will work out fine.  Haven't sold the Atlantis yet.  It turns out my CL ad wasn't hitting the Boulder index so had to repost on Sunday.  I've had a few hits but nothing serious yet.  

In the group's experience is this price going to work or will I need to drop it?

I'd hold tight on the price, at least for a bit. In the world of used bikes, if you attract the right buyer, the price doesn't matter. If you attract the wrong buyer, the price doesn't matter. IME, lowball prices attract the bottom feeders who'll suck the life out of you before deciding the bike isn't quite the right shade of blue.

I managed to sell it today to a nice guy named Rod that drove down from Fort Collins tonight.   He had a couple Mercians that he had built up to Atlantis geometry and seemed really pleased with it.  It's a sad day for me but it's getting a good home and I took delivery of the Ogre this morning.  I think it's going to be really great.
