Seeking reviews — anyone by chance use these fenders on their Rambouillet? I'm looking for pre-drilled, relatively easy-to-install fenders with included mudflaps, and these fit the bill.

Planet Bike Cascadia ALX (50mm)

Portland Design Works Full Metal (45mm)

The 28mm Continental GP4000sii tires I usually run measure an actual 30-31mm, so I'd like to continue using them without any worry about clearance once fall and winter arrive.

I have some used Planet Bike cascades ALX aluminum fenders with he built in flaps and stays that Id be happy to sell if you’re interested .
I used them on my Hillborne for about a year and a half...and they were very solid and pretty carefree. I liked them a lot.
They are black like the link you posted .

Honjo H50 hammered aluminum from Rene Here for me on my Ram. They are longer than others, a necessity for my location and "damn the torpedoes" feeling about rides I plan to take despite weather. I installed Paul Racer brakes to fit 32mm tires under fender. There are smaller Honjos (H30) for tires narrower than 30mm. Given my record of replacing previous fenders (SKS and PB) for various issues, Honjos are worth the additional cost in the long run.

Related note. I've used hammered Honjos and those from Velo Orange -- have the last on my 2003 Riv right now.

The VOs are the better value for the money, at half the cost of the Honjos, and they look very nice, but they don't look as nice or feel as nice -- I mean hefting the things -- they somehow feel more flimsy -- as the Honjos.

Patrick Moore, who will split the difference on his next fender install with a pair of smooth, Berthoud stainless steel fenders.

Andy, did you have to roll out the H50 fenders in order to have them fit in the Paul Racers?

Not at all. With the Paul Racers everything fit without bodging, bending or crimping.

Love it when a plan comes together like that!

+1. I used the Honjo, smooth, H50 w/ Berthoud stays to minimize TCO. The Honjo's are the fenders that I prefer, having used SKS, VO, Planet Bike, Berthoud and Blumels. Here is a pic of my AHH that had Paul Racers brazed on, so I had the Honjo fenders painted to match with the touch up color.

I have Velo Orange 52 x700 Zeppelin Noir fenders on my Soma Wolverine. The shape adds stiffness over a rounder shape. I used the stick on reinforcements for the bolts at the fork crown and seat stay bridge. I have Honjo’s on my Bombadill and used to have Berthoud’s on a commuter.

Installation is pretty easy but small nut drivers make it easier.

I run 44c with room to spare but have been unable to get 48’s to clear.

The me the Berthouds are the most robust but unless painted or powder coated not very attractive. The Honjos are jewel like and expensive. The VO came in a good size and are a good value.

I've got a set of PDW 700x45 city fenders on my 650b Sam, and PDW 700x37 on my Frank Jones Sr. I've previously had various Honjos, SKS, Planet Bike, and others I don't even remember too well. The PDW fenders are by far the sturdiest (without being at all heavy), best made, best designed, quietest, easiest to fit, and prettiest (downright elegant) I've ever used. The safety break-away stays are effective and still attractive. For the 45's on my 650b Sam, I shortened the back ends of both the front and rear, then used the cut off pieces as templates to reshape and drill the ends so the mudflaps would fit. They aren't inexpensive, but are well worth the price to me.

Arthur: I've used most fenders, but not those from Portland Design Works. They do look nice, but can you say how they are sturdier than Honjos or Berthouds? (I know that Honjos and Berthouds seem to be sturdier than fenders from VO; they're also quieter, tho' I haven't found H's or B's noisy.)

I'm not disagreeing, just wondering, because I my try them for a couple of my bikes; I particularly like the breakaway strut feature.

Have you found that they resist denting better than Honjos (I've only used the "hammered" models) or Berthouds (smooth, stainless steel)?

I'm looking at the geometries on the PDW site and for the 61 Roadini, and I can't figure out if the PDW 45 will fit on the Roadini.   I like my 33 Jack Browns, but they don't fit under my current VO fenders...actually my 28s barely fit under them, constant rub.  Running the shimano 105 brakes, if anyone has any insight from experience, thanks!

Patrick Moore and Lammbo,
The PDW fenders are made differently than Honjos/Velo Orange. Thicker, harder grade of aluminum with cut edges rather than rolled. I'd say they're less likely to dent, but I don't run fenders on gravel, so I haven't really tested that hypothesis. It stands to reason, though, that thicker, harder fenders would be more resistant to denting.

On my Frank Jones Sr, I run Soma Supple Vitesse 700x33's, and they fit perfectly under the PDW 37's. Not having rolled edges gives a few more mm clearance and rain coverage. That said, I don't like to use fenders as oversized as a lot of people do. My thought is that you can avoid stick jams two ways. One is to have enough room to let them ride the tire all the way through. The other is that you fit tire to fender closely enough that sticks don't have room to get started—of course, having good breakaway struts becomes more important if you choose the second option. PDW's have the best I've seen. Snow clearance is another thing, and I have virtually zero experience with that.

IIRC, the fork and rear clearances on my FJ are similar to the Roadeo, since it's essentially a single speed road bike. I was able to fit my PDW 45's (from the Sam), but the front brake calipers (Tektro R559) kept bumping the top of the fenders, and I didn't really need fenders that big for the tires I wanted to run. With PDW 37's and 700x33 tires, I found I could use smaller brakes in front (Tektro R737) which I prefer anyway for feel and looks on that bike. Fender fit has to be considered in conjunction with brakes, if you have side pulls. If you have center pulls, cantis, linears, discs, or hub brakes, your fender choice would be driven almost entirely by tire and frame clearances.

Yes, thanks for that information; good to know.

I have a pair of custom fenders for my Matthews pending at Kelpie Cycles; Colin used to make them from titanium, but after an obstacle tangled his front ti fender and bent the fork but not the fender, he decided he ought to use aluminum instead; not quite as strong. Still, he uses a thicker sheet and slightly thicker stays. These will be 76 mm wide. That's more than enough for the current 700C X 60 mm tires, but they will also accommodate 650B X 70s if I ever mount such wheels. (Using aluminum also reduces the cost by $100 -- $200/pr + shipping instead of $300.)

The rolled edge makes a fender worth the attention and effort to install right. The amount of water kept contained by that simple feature of fenders made of softer alloy than the PDWs, if you really ride in the wet, is impressive.
