While eating at one of our favorite coffee shops near Jamestown, Va. (on the Va. Capital Trail) recently, our group spotted this near-pristine Rivendell Road (?) parked at the outside deck.
I don't see many of these in my neck of the woods so stopped to ask. The owner bought it new (maybe late 1990's?). I doesn't seem to have gotten much use, but maybe he is super-careful with the bike.Inline image

That is pretty indeed, and even the Paris Roubaix tires look new. Those (at least, if they are the first generation) are wonderful tires, as nice as any I've ridden from RH or Schwalbe's best (very good ideed).

I'm often surprised at how clean many owners keep their bikes. I'm careful about the drivetrain and components but less so about the non-sliding parts.

Know thine own meaning, but wouldst gabble like

A thing most brutish, I endowed thy purposes

With words that made them known.

Also noteworthy are the Sachs brakes, derailleurs and crankset.

New Success goodness. I think Riv was selling those bits at the time.

Ah, it has the Campy Ego-looking brifters, too. I don't remember the connection between the companies now but you could get those from Sachs and they would index Shimano 8-speed cassettes.

A red Riv Road spotted on the Lighthouse Century, a gray-blue Homer, seemed like a 26 inch wheeled machine, both in front of me. The Homer and red Riv riders stuck together and I could not catch them. One or two Roadinis spotted too.  I rode my white with blue accent Roadeo, two friends on a white Guru with red accents, and other friend on white Poprad with red accents (thanks Suntour Jim).  We were Team White Bikes.

Very few notable machines out there.  Team White Bikes passed a green Fitzgerald and a frenchy blue Boulder Bicycles going up the hill towards Harmony. 99% or so of the other bikes flat black carbon or flat black something or other.

It's always fun to find a Riv in the wild. All three pictured here are especially nice. Thank you Paul and Ryan for sharing.

Best,
Rich in ATL

The Lighthouse Century sports some beautiful natural scenery (as well as some beautiful bikes, Mike!). I did it once during my pink Pogliaghi era and remember some headwinds, too! Thanks for the report:)

Paul,

This is more of an excuse to post a picture of my 1999 Riv road standard, but I do have a tangentially related story ...

IMG_20190531_100013.jpg

First, it is almost as if someone had lifted my bike out of the garage here in San Francisco and deposited it in Virginia.  I mean, I don't have the Nitto lugged stem, but otherwise we're not too far off.

Second, this picture of mine was actually taken in Virginia a few years ago.  I flew out to the East Coast to meet up with friends, and we road the C&O and Gap trails from Pittsburgh to D.C.  I think this was taken somewhere in the vicinity of Vienna, VA.

And, of course, curious to hear from the owner of the twin Riv!

Best,

Steve
