I just got an urge to try riding in my Birkenstock Arizona's
today .... wow .... how great are they for riding on platform pedals!
(I have Wellgo MG-1's)

Up and down steep grades .... they were great. I've used flat
bottomed sneakers for years ..... but I've found a new favorite shoe.
A great combo for big feet. No hot spots ... overheating ...just
freedom :)

...in terms of recreational cycling there are many riders who would probably benefit more from
improving their taste than from improving their performance.

David... I suppose that pic. was while you were vacationing in Oregon during the winter?
now that you are living in SoCal you can wear your Ferragamos on your rides.

If you really want to take it up another click, invenst in a pair of
the shoes. I am a loyal Derby fan and hardly wear the sandals any
more. They can be found on ebay for deals, resoled every couple of
years for $50 or so. They are the best thing in shoes ever as far as
I can tell. I get about 2 resoles and 6 years out of a pair before
the leather liner at the top of the heel starts to wear through. My
oldest pair is on the block to become a pair of franken shoes. I have
been looking for some thick tough rubber to glue on the bottoms and
trying to figure out if I can fit them into my sewing machine to put a
doubler on the inside heals.

Rob, Derby's .... yeah ... I've always wanted some Birk shoes !
They even make 48N.

I've got 3 pairs of the sandals ... one upper dating back to the
early 90's..... nothing like resolable footwear :) I'm riding in the
narrow ones ... which I didn't wear much as for walking they were not
as comfortable as the regular ones.... but for riding ... the narrows
are perfect.

David ... all those bikes .... awesome :)

I soooo want to move to California . . . . .

The Quickbeam has been sold (twice over now).  I have those Milanos pictured from 1992 or so though!  Re-soled countless times, full re-build of the lowers about five years ago.  Worth every penny.  I have some of the shoes as well as three other sandal types.  The shoes fit weird, really narrow.  I don't wear 'em much.

And Mike, I thought that would be more of a late-spring day in PDX!!! :-)

guess you haven't heard that line.... how do you tell it's winter in Oregon?  People are wearing socks with their Birkenstocks.

I tried some on... just didn't feel right. I've been addicted to Chacos for 10+ years.  Now i just need to figure out how to put spd's on them.

My feet have Teva tan lines, but Chaco tan-lines aren't uncommon either.   Hadn't had Birk lines, tho'....

I really dislike riding in chacos, they are always too wide for me and strike the crank on the inside when I pedal.

Tried them with mks touring pedals and grip kings, they are a no go for me.  Super comfortable for walking around though.

Tevas + grip kings are my favorite for long rides.
Birks + grip kings are my favorite if I am going to be riding for a while and then walking around somewhere, tevas sort of suck for that.

Have run into an interesting issue with Teva sandals and Grip Kings.
On longer rides, the toes on my right foot will go numb. Figure I'm
trying to curl them as I ride. Doesn't seem to be an issue in Keens
or on sneaker pedals. Just that particular combo on longer rides.

Will no longer be an issue as am pulling the GKs off that bike and
installing sneaker pedals. Figure to go with what works.

I just rode RAGBRAI with exactly that combination (GK + Tevas) and had no ill effects. It really just shows how different we all are.

I do wish I'd had something with toe protection in our tent city though as I tore a toenail on a stake during a late night kybo run.

I love the Z lines on my Chaco shod feet. :-)

I hear a lot of complaints about riding in Chacos due to the width.  I've noticed the same, but I tend to pedal heel out, so I assumed that it was the same problem that I have in all shoes (I ride extra long spindles, special ordered, on my Frog pedals).  I was actually thinking of ordering some "knee saver" spacers to make more room for this very reason so that I could give flat pedals another go...

That said, I rode almost 10 miles on the touring pedals that Riv sells with power grips in my Chaco sandals last weekend and they worked out quite well, even without the spacers, so it might have just been a matter of becoming accustomed to the difference...

Yes .... the tans tines are great !!  I'm really loving riding in them.... so much so I started using a mid foot foot over pedal position. Wow .... what a difference for me in efficiency and feel of the bike.  I had heard of a mid foot position ala Lon Haldeman and others ... but I never really tried it before until now. The Birks are perfect for this because of my high arch feet and their bountiful arch support along with a mid foot stiffness not found in sneakers. I wear a 47 Birk, 15 street shoe.  Unbelievably .... even on the Bombadil .... I can sometimes rub my front fender with my Birks once in a great while with a mid foot position ..... but the beauty of no clips/straps is I can just move my feet back a little bit as needed temporarily. I don't think I'll have this problem on the Hunqapillar though as the front-center length is even longer.

oh, forgot to say, after modding my grip kings with the spikes from Riv, birkenstocks are WAY better to ride in.

the problem I was having before the mod was they felt slippery.  there is nothing worse than feeling like your feet might slip/losing confidence when riding.

so, if you love riding birks, and use GK's, consider spiking them.
