Modern Geometry Atlantis with Drop Bars?

Just curious if anyone here has built up their long-chainstay era Atlantis with drops as opposed to something with more sweepback - and if so, do you feel too stretched out or that you're sacrificing any comfort? 

 

I got a great deal on a 2021 Atlantis frame (at least I assume '21 as its stamped with an M21xxxx serial) but as I already have a Clem with billie bars, I'm strongly considering building the Atlantis with a short stem and drop bars. Given the price tag of the 60mm 90-190, I think I'm just looking for positive affirmation before pulling the trigger :)

Hey Chris.

I have a 51 cm Joe Appa, which IIRC has a 57.xx effective top tube.  I think of myself as someone who rides about a 55 cm square (C-T) road bike with generally an 11 cm stem.  Assuming all that is correct, I would get a similar fit with a 9 cm stem on my JA , which seems entirely reasonable to me…

Hey Chris,
This is my take on the drop bar Atlantis. I believe it is probably a 61, frameset was sold to me as a 60. I am 6'2", long arms, typically run my saddle height at around 79cm (from ctr of bb) and a PBH of 88cm. I run a super long nitto quill adaptor and this 0mm discord creemee stem. This setup is as comfortable as I believe a bicycle can possibly be. Interestingly, I recently ordered a 60mm 90-190 that is due to arrive monday. If these pictures or pictures of me on the Atlantis with this 0mm, and / or the 90-190mm stem would help I'd be happy to snap some for you. I will say that with a longer stem I did feel just a touch stretched out but I also knew this frame could be considered a touch big for me.

After having spent some time riding with taller, closer stems I learned that I prefer wider bars than I had ever ridden. I have pretty broad shoulders for my frame and the narrow bar, long and low quills of 90's roadbikes have been killing my body for years but that's how it was and I didn't question it. I have switched all of my bikes over to long quilled (190-225mm), short reach (0-60mm) stems and they are all more comfortable.

Analog Cycles is a great resource, and they make the best threaded stems.  They got beat up a little bit on another thread here, but they flat out told that there tanglefoot bikes were informed by the hunqapillar.  With that, I use drops on my looong top tube hunqapillar, and to get it to work, I use a discord stem and short, shallow, wide drop bars.  The best combo I've  found is the shortest fingerling stem with the  ritchey corralitos bar.  If anyone is interested in using drops on a modern Riv, I do have a (w)right stem and tumbleweed big dipper, both in silver, that were tested but barely ridden, that I would sell.

Chris, another good resource for questions like this is Bike Insights. If you have a dropbar bike setup that you know works for you, figuring out what the difference in stack and reach is easy on BI. 

Or you can compare the Old vs New Atlantis geo to get an idea how the stack and reach has changed. For instance, the 2022 Atlantis (probably the geo you have?) 55 cm is closer to a 2017 58 cm Atlantis, with only +2 mm reach but +40 mm stack. Of course there are alot of other differences, but in terms of bike fit that's the most important. 

Capt. Conway, did Analog/Discord discontinue the (W)right stem? I only see the Fingerlings now for 1" steerers. Never tried the (W)right, but I have a Fingerling and I love it.

I am fortunate enough to own a 2008 61cm & 2019?. 59 cm Atlantis. They are completely different bikes altogether but do share nearly the same length top tube. I run both as drop bar bikes, and both with pretty short stems. As others above have recommended, I simply measure the length (nose of saddle to center of stem/bar) on a bike that I fit comfortably on and order the appropriate stem to fit that length. They both ride great in their own right. I ride long miles on both bikes with comfort. The short stem stiffens up the front end a bit, which works for me.
