I recall seeing a slotted handgrip when using albatross bars and bar ends so the housing is out of the way of the grip. can anybody point me to these or suggest another method

If you are thinking of cork grips, then Riv has them pre-slotted:

It's been awhile but I think I simply bought cork grips and slotted them myself, for a little bit of a deeper groove to keep the cable out of the way.

A recent Riv email update (July 31) had a small bit about slipping shifter housing underneath Oury or ESI grips. I'm not sure how to link to the email online so I took this screenshot of the email (attached).

I actually just did this yesterday with some ESI grips on my Albatross bars. I was re-cabling my bike so I didn't have bar-end shifters installed that I was working around, but I found the process much easier than I anticipated. I used glass cleaner instead of hand sanitizer. I've also heard that hairspray works well. I just put the cabling in the ESI grip and slipped them both on together. I used a bit more cabling than I needed so I could cut the extra at the bar-end. If you try to pull from the other size to get it even, it slips through rather easily, and you'll have to start over (this got me twice).

I use these grips and run them like this, with a small zip tie at the forward end.  Been using like this for 5 years with no issues.

I just used cloth tape. There's also cloth tape with padding.

I used these ergo grips with bar ends, and it worked well. With the grips rotated to the most comfortable position, the cable ran across the thin portion of the grip, and I used a zip tie near the front to secure it.
