For anyone wondering. For anyone who likes to fill their frame to the point of irresponsibility.

I found a very low priced set of like-new Soma Cazadero 50s and mounted em up. Measure 47mm actual on Velocity Atlas rims. I have a 2017 non-canti Sam.

Clearance is minimal, but I've seen tighter. It's tighter in the rear at the seat stay than anywhere up front. Probably the absolute max I would run. They ride great, I had 42s and loved them, I wish they would make a 45/47.

Brenton, I've got a 2017 Sam like yours. I had canti posts brazed on, and have used Bruce Gordon Rock n Roads in 43mm. They are fantastic riding tires! I have more space still, of course. I think I might be able to fit the R&R 48s in there? You might want to try those, if you are looking for a slightly smaller than 50mm tire?
They roll surprisingly well on pavement and are outstanding in the loose stuff. Super good people at B. Gordon, too.

On my 2010-11 size 60 Sam H, size 50mm gravel king SK spun freely with the bike in the stand but rubbed the fork blades when actually riding, especially leaning into a turn. I remember experimenting with pressure but it did not help. I'm always about 170lbs and wondered if a lighter rider might've lessened tire deformation. I'm no expert

There’s all kinds of factors at play. The 50mm gravelkings might have been 50mm actual and yeah that could definitely rub with some torque. Rim width makes a difference also. I’m 185lbs and I haven’t had any rubbing yet despite some spirited riding on these tires’ maiden voyage. The cazadero at the widest point (the knobs) was a hair under 47mm. The rock and road 48mm measure 50mm according to Bruce Gordon website, so those might also be sketchy. I had a friend with a canti Sam who said his 48mm Rene herse knobs rubbed in the rear. The tires I got were $50 for a pair so it felt like a good price to experiment with.

Thanks, Brenton.  I just got and built up a newer 60cm Sam with canti's and was curious about the max size myself.  I put on Schwalbe Marathon Greengaurds labelled at 50mm, about 47mm actual and they fit fine (mounted on Atlas and Cliffhanger rims - I tried on two sets of wheels with the same results).  I actually have a bit more clearance than you show in your pics.  I was wondering if the larger Cadezaros would fit with the knobs.  Good to know.

Speaking of Cazaderos, can anyone say how well these seem to roll compared to similar Rene Herse knobbies — I think that the Oracle Ridge is the closest in width.

Aside: the ORs are lovely tires: roll very well indeed on pavement, and corner like road tires, at least on my Matthews “road bike for dirt.” Alas, they don’t set up well tubeless and I replaced them with 53 mm Thunderburts, which are very nice but don’t roll quite as freely and don’t corner as seamlessly on pavement — very small deficiencies compared to the ORs but noticeable nonetheless. BUT! The TBs set up tubeless impeccably; I seated them with a skinny road pump and they held 40-50 psi (in real world riding, 18 psi) even before I put sealant in.
