Since I'm using my Appaloosa as my camping bike, my Atlantis got kind of demoted to the humiliating state of "really heavy road bike".  That's not good enough, so I pulled her fenders, and re-shod her with some 29x2.0" knobbies.  Please don't hate me that the sidewalls say "Cannondale" on them.  They are hand-me-downs from my Mountain Bike Racing Team.  Now the Atlantis is looking stripped down, bad-ass, and butch.  If you wanted a nice steel rim-brake monstercross bike, this would not be a bad way to do it.  It should be fun for some summer trail riding.

This is how my Atlantis looked before I civilized it with p65s and Tubus racks. It was not heavy, not dead, and NOT SLOW.

Nice! I'm about to do the same with my Hunqapillar (take off the fenders and racks, maybe replace the triple up front with a 1 x drivetrain, or sell it which is what I should do - but you're convincing me a demotion might be ok after all).

Thanks to Mark and Bill for the inspiration.  Here's a photo of my recently acquired Atlantis with 2.1 Thunder Burts.  Rides great with the exception of the lackluster Shimano brakes (these will be swapped out for a set of Pauls during the next rainy day).

Happy riding,

Eric

That said, the Atlantis was definitely an iconoclast when it came out.  Drop bar wide-tire all-rounder?  Pshaw.

Bill,

How does the Fat-lantis differ from the Hunqa-Hillborne you built up in 2014.  https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/albums/72157626464189260  That build was the inspiration for my Summer Break Sam.  https://www.flickr.com/photos/129545862@N03/19238298132/in/dateposted-public/  Just curious what differences you noticed.

The Hillborne and the Atlantis are still in my stable, and they are both terriffic.  Frequently, these days, I get the opportunity to get out for just a couple hours and I walk into the garage not knowing which bike I'm going to take.  The Hillborne and the FatLantis get selected pretty frequently.  The Atlantis is definitely more stout, and it's a heavier build.  With a 3x8 drivetrain, heavier rims, wider wirebead tires, and a Brooks saddle, the Atlantis is probably 28 pounds or so. The Hillborne hasn't worn Rock and Road tires in a while, and it's set up as a dirtable road bike with 700x38 Barlow Pass Extralight tires, and has a 2x9 drivetrain.  It's a little under 24 pounds.

I have been contemplating my ultimate dirt road bike, and often come up with my list of attributes and find that I'm describing either the Atlantis or the Hillborne or both.  If I was to order a custom Rivendell today, it would have the bottom bracket shell and chainstays of an Atlantis.  I think that particular part of the Atlantis is bordering on a masterpiece.  Unsquished round cross section tubing, in a generously stout diameter, that wraps around a 29x2.0 tire, allows room for a triple crankset, with correct chainline AND a respectably narrow Q-factor is not easy, and Grant nailed it.  Cut and paste that into my custom!  It would have the same seatstay setup as an Atlantis, but would have Legolas dropouts and seatstay tubing.  The fork would have the Atlantis crown with Legolas fork blades.  The sloping top tube and HTA would match the Hillborne, but again the maintubes (TT, DT and ST) would be the lightest tubing Grant would allow me to spec, presumably like a Legolas.  It would be stripped bare of braze-ons, save fenders and two bottle cages.  The cantilever posts would be set up perfectly for 25-26mm wide rims.  If I had this done and sensible build, I could maybe end up with a 22 pound dirt road bike.  Since I have the Hillborne and the Atlantis, I don't feel any particular need to move on that custom idea.  Maybe if I had to downsize my current "N" I could replace two bikes with one, but I don't feel any need or compulsion to do that today.

24# Hillborne!?  Now you've got me considering a 2x8 or even 1x8 drivetrain.  What wheels are you using?  Loved the description of your dirt road custom.  That would be an awesome bike.  Upping the clearances for a 2.0 tire would be great.  Rear tire clearance and the bottom bracket drop have been my only reservations on my Summer Break Sam.  Truly love the bike but have scraped a few pedals with the lower bottom bracket.  Would love one of those 650b Hunqs Grant was hinting at in the Blug.  With that as an N+1, I'd strip the Sam down considerably.

Thanks for the response.

The wheels are some ceramic side-wall road rims with the "Matrix" label (Trek's componentry label).  They are skinny road rims, 32 hole, XT hubs.  I kind of want to retire them, partly because of the hassles associated with ceramic braking bits, but they have been freaking indestructable.

I'll weigh it again and post a photo and complete build list on flickr.

It's a great bike: much like the English sport tourers of the 60s and 70s but finished with more thought. My Atlantis is upthread. It's heavier than my old Raleigh Competition but certainly not a slug.

With an Atlantis you get great proven geometry with stout tubes. There's a significant place for that in the biking world. Stout tubes are not a deficiency, they are a choice. When you have them they support a wide use profile.

It's not a racing bike, but it definitely is everything else: Good road rider, good off road rider...  I firmly believe it is Riv's best offer.

Drew,

Very nice build, I know just how sweet the Atlantis rides it defies the notion that stout tubing rides dead. On the contrary it rides with nimble spirit and loaded handles like sure footed with comfort.

I don't know whether I would say it's Riv's best offer because Riv offers so many great rides. It does seem to have a secret sauce.

Enjoy the ride.

So I finally finished up my Atlantis! Waiting on my Seatpost and leather bar tape, but it is more than rideable now. Managed to stuff some 1.95 tires with fenders. Took some work, but everything spins smooth now. Can't wait to put a few miles on it. Now I'm on to an Appaloosa build.

Nice! I can't quite make it out - what tire/fender combo is that? I'd love some 2"ish tires and fenders on my 58cm atlantis. I'm sure I could fit 2.1 thunder burts with fenders if I had 60mm fenders. But I only have 50's :(

These bikes just look so right with chubby tires.

Running 700x45 Smart Sams w/ VO Zepplins. Judging from Mr. Muller's post I can squeeze a 1.95 in there. Guess I need more volume and less knob

I think the BB drop is 8 cm, so it oughta be in the neighborhood of (62.2 / 2) x (2.54 x 2) - 8 ~= 28.2 cm.

My 2.1 Thunder Burts do not fit in Zeppelin fenders. I'm running the tires on Velocity Dyad rims. It's close, but no cigar. Even if it did work, I'd have maybe a millimeter or two of clearance! Not enough for me.

What should it be:

622 rim + 51mm tire should be (622 + 51 + 51)/2 = 724mm or 28.5 inches

I measured my Atlantis, axle center to ground, and it was 14-1/4 inches.  Good so far...

Wheel radius - BB drop = bb height
(724/2) - 80 = 282mm or 11.1 inches

I measured 11-1/4 inches.  Close enough?

28.2 cm is a wee bit over 11 inches, so good -- nice to know that the Matthews has Rivendell-levels of bb drop; or rather, that I'm not losing anything in the Matthews to the Atlantis in this regard.

Rivs, as I've said before, are my bike handling/fitting/feeling benchmarks.

Interesting build, and I covet those tires (RTB, right?). Flipped -- Albatross bar?

The gearing is 1 X ? Does the low gear (what is it?) allow you to get up hills easily with such a load?

What is the bag on the back? It looks like a small duffel, but it must be designed for seat mounting. Can you describe?

Details on the build and anncillory bike packing equip.
26"wheeled 56cm Atlantis (purchased off list member)
RTP tires on mismatch wheelset Shimano hubs
Drivetrain 11-36 10 speed cassette, Deore long cage rear mech, single 42t chainring (White Industries 180 crank length), VP-001 pedals and SKF BB
Cockpit NOS Nitto Chromo 120mm stem, Soma Fab Oxford handlebar (flipped), NOS Suntour brake levers, NOS Suntour thumb shifter, combo Oury grips and Newbaums cloth tape
Cambium seat, Tektro CR720 brakes, Pass and Stow 5 rail rack, and Bagman Sport saddlebag support (mounts to saddle rails)
Bags used on this trip are the Sea to Summit Event waterproof compression bags (I have had great success with these bags keeping gear dry and compressing the bulk to fit into small spaces)

I am considering this a phase 1 build to validate the ride qualities and utility of an all road 26" supple tire bike. If I find this to be something I want to take further I will be looking to build a better wheelset with Dyno hub. First few outings have been primarily pavement (couple of commutes to work and this pictured camping trip). One note from camping trip, one section of county highway had rumble strips cut into the narrow (est. width 4 foot) shoulder. Many riders in the group had issues either trying to use only the smooth section of shoulder I rolled right through the rumble strips with no significant handling issues. :-D
Hope to get some serious gravel miles in in the coming week.
Cheers

I too recently made the switch. Went with the 29x2.1 Thunder Burt evo's.  Seriously made this bike come to life. they perfectly compliment the back roads I typically ride.
I couldn't fit them under my fenders, but I had been wanting to take them off for summer anyway. Very pleased with the switch.

The more I ride mine the more I love them!. Thunder Burts are delicious! My ride today is a perfect example of their amazing full-range capacity. Asphalt of various types and conditions, Dirt roads of various types and conditions, and single track with some technical rocky bits, all in equal measure for four hours. TB's are at home on all of them. What a tire!

With abandon,
